Thera is variety in plenty at the Caledonian Fair which was opened at Kilbirnie Park last night. Captain R. H. He stated that the object of the fair was the raising'of funds to assist in the erection of a Caledonian Hall.
Councillor W. H. Bennett, who attended in the Mayor’s stead, spoke of the colonising qualities of the Scots. Sir John Luke remarked on the fact that owing to two postponements on account of inclement weather, the opening ceremony of the fair was taknig place on St. Andrew’s Day, the one great 1 day for Scotsmen throughout the Empire. - Boxes of chocolates were presented to Mrs. Nimmo, chieftainess of the society, Mrs. Bennett (in whose absence Mrg. . McVicar accented the gift); Lady Luke, | for whom Mrs. Waft took the present;
and Mrs. Goldsmith. Councillor Bennett then declared the fair open and wished the Caledonian society all success in its venture. Highland dancing to the skirl of the bagpipes was the next attraction. Jazzing was also commenced and the large rrowd either joined in this or paid visits to the many and varied side-shows. The fair will l>e continued for a fortnight. There will be yacht and motorboat racing, life-saving displays, boxing contests for both professionals and amateurs, while the local Chinese intend giving a grand fireworks display..
