A FASTER SERVICE

GREYMOUTH TO WELLINGTON JOURNEY IN TWENTY-TWO HOURS Greymouth to Wellington in twentytwo hours and Greymouth to Nelson in about half that time are services now made possible as a result of the Railway Department’s negotiations with the proprietors of motor vehicles operating on the West Coast route between Glenhope and Recfton. Under the new arrangement, passengers may leave Wellington by the 7.30 p.m. steamer, which arrives at Port Nelson about 6 a.m. the following day, and entrain, after breakfast, on a coastbound express which will run from the wharf, the Department having made the necessary arrangements with the Nelson Harbour Board in this connection. The express, which is the first fast service yet inaugurated on the Nelson section, will leave the port at 7.40 a.m., and run on a fast schedule, with a limited number of stops to Glenhope (61 miles south), arriving there about 10.30 a.m. Through motor services will be joined, and a start made within a quarter of an hour for Murchison, which will be reached in time for lunch. Passengers will arrive at Rcefton (145 miles from the port) in time to connect with the 4 p.m. train for Greymouth, which will be reached at 6.53 p.m. Greymouth is 192 miles south of Nelson.

Passengers travelling northward from Greymouth for Nelson and Wellington, who desire to take the West Coast route, will leave Greymouth by the 7.20 a.m. train, which arrives at Reefton three hours later. The motor journey will be broken at Murchison for lunch, and the cars will arrive at Glenhope in time to connect with the express train which reaches Port Nelson at 6.49 p.m. The steamer for Wellington leaves at 7.30 p.m., and reaches her destination at about 5.30 a.m. the following day. Service cars running between Westport and Inangahua will enable passengers from or to Westport to connect with the through 1 Rcefton-Glenhopc service cars.

Arrangements have been made for the issue of through tickets by rail and motor for passengers travelling by the combined services.
