MANAWATU COMES TO TOWN SOME PROMISING COLTS IN ACTION WIN FOR CITY PLAYERS Extraordinary to relate, though the two centres are only about ninety miles apart, yesterday witnessed the first visit of a Manawatu cricket team to Welwas played at the Basin Reserve in cheerless weather. The country eleven included a couple of representatives from Feilding, and their forces were depleted in so far that R. W. Hope, the Palmerston North fast bowler, who accompanied the New Zealand team on the Australian tour last season, was unable to play owing to the fact that he had to enter hospital for an operation for appendicitis. J. S. Hiddleston, who led the Wellington side, which included a number of colts, won the toss from F. Cooper, and Wellington took first use of a somewhat dead wicket. Mason and Airey opened the Wellington innings to the bowling of Gallichan and Murdoch, and so ably did the country bowlers perform that the first fifty minutes only enw 34 runs on the slate. Here Mason, who had reached 17; was snapped up at point by Norris off McVicar. J. Hutchings then joined Airey, and the pair carried the score along to 81, mainly as the result of enterprising plav by Hutchings, who used his feet well in getting out to punch overtossed slows by the colt, L. Spring. After notching 29 in sound style, Airey wont out to one from the slow bowler, missed, and was smartly stumped by Day. A Good Stand.

Hiddleston, the Wellington captain, then joined Hutchings, and the pair put on 58 for the third wicket. The country bowling commanded respect, and at no time did the runs come at a fast pace. After reaching 63, Hutchings, who bad played an enterprising, if

somewhat lucky ' innings, was brilliantly taken low down at point by Norris off Smillie. Hiddleston; who was much more restrained than usual, went on to score 76, when, in attempting to swing one from Spring to leg, the ball came back sharply and scattered bis sticks. Thereafter James (18) and Fitzmaurice (36) were the only batsmen to trouble the scorers, and the Wellington innings, which had lasted for three hours, dosed for 251. The veteran. A. McVicar, who took three wickets for 46 runs, came out best of the half-dozen bowlers tried by the Manawatu captain. Spring, a 17-year-old colt, did well in securing four for 103 with slow right-hand leg breaks. He is inclined to over-toss them, but. once he got a length, he commanded respect and accounted for the downfall of Airey, Hiddleston, James and Virtue Gallichan, who secured two for 57, was the stock bowler of the country side, and he would have done much better had he pegged away at the leg instead of the off-pin. The Manawatu fielding was smart and alert, and Day, who only allowed one bye and four leg-byes, did sound work with the gloves, claiming three catches. Country Team at the Wickets. The Manawatu team commenced their innings at 2.15, but made an inauspicious start against the bowling of Massey, who clean bowled Norris and McVicar by the time 22 runs were on the slate. ’ The Manawatu captain. F. Cooper, then joined Gallichan, and the pair carried the score along to 72, mainly as the result of crisp off shots by Cooper, who at one time played with the Ponsonby senior eleven in Auckland. After reaching 38, Cooper was beaten by a good one from Massey. With seven runs added, Donaldson, a Feilding representative, was clean bowled by Massey, who had thus hit the sticks of the first four batsmen. A Stubborn Stand. Spring then joined Gallichan, who was batting very soundly, and rhe pail added 47 for the fifth wicket. Massey, Grant, Hutchings, Hiddleston, and Tripe all had a turn at the crease in nn endeavour to break up the stubborn partnership, but it was not until Spring allowed a full toss from Tripe to lob on his sticks that a separation was effected. Sriring had shaped well for his modest contribution of 15. Gallichan, who bv this time was well set, opened out on tho bowling, while Kells, the ex-Wellington ’Varsity Rugby player, held an end up. With the total at 175 Kells was bowled bv an off-break from Hiddleston. After equalling Hid dleston’s top score of 76, Gallichnn. who

had batted very soundly, lashed cut at one from Browne, and wag clean bowled. The retiring batsman showed sound defence, and was strong on the on-sidc. After Gallichan's dismissal, the end soon came, the innings closing for 177, which left the home side victorious by 77 runs on the first innings. Massey, who bowled nineteen overs for four wickets and 48 runs, was the only bowler of class on the Wellington side. Hiddleston did well in a lading light to get three for 28, and Browne was fortunate, considering ho sent down so many deliveries oil the leg side, to come out with three for 17.

Tho visitors, who returned by the express train last evening, were hospitably entertained by the Wellington Cricket Association, ami hopes were expressed that this inaugural visit of a Manawatu team to Wellington would be the forerunner of many more similar visits. .
