FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE
further regulations necessary
The Department of Agriculture has notified,chambers of lar that the regulations designed to safe guard the Dominion against foot and mouth disease are not operating as effectively as hoped, and that further rules have been found advisable. The circular went on to state:— ■The disease having recent ly . more widespread in Great Britain, there is good reason to fear that some considerable period of time must elapse before Great Britain can become tree from foot and month disense infection, thus creating a position -which necessitates the exercise of more extreme care in preventing the entrance of any material which possibly act as a medium for conveying infection. Af? resards the Continent, condition p are very bad. , _ “After consultation with the High Commissioner it has been decided to make further regulations altogether prohibiting the use of hay. straw, or chaff, for packing purposes, with the provision, however, that in the case of Great Britain it may be admitted provided it has been effectively disinfected before use. and is accompanied by a sworn certificate or statutory declaration to that effect from the exporter or packer, counter-signed as correct by a responsible officer appointed by the High Commissioner fnr New Zealand for th purnose. “Tn order to enable exporters to adjust their arrangements, it is proposed that these regulations shall come into force in New Zealand on March 25.’’
