ISSUE AT NEXT ELECTION

REFORM PARTY’S BIG MAJORITY

That th© Beform Party’s large majority. will probably be the main issue raised at the next general election was the opinion ventured by the Minister of Education (Hon. R. A. Wright) last night, at a gathering of the Women’s auxiliary of the Wellington Reform League, held in honour of the return from abroad of the presidentfMrs. C. W. Earle). "It is very evident,’’ observed the Minister," that the next election will be harder to fight and to win than the last. That 'would Arise from one cause, and one cause only, namely, that the presept Government has such a large majority." People were inclined to imagine, he said, that when the majority was large Ministers of the Crown would become swollen-headed That was quite an erroneous idea, as he could assure them that the present Cabinet was composed of most modest individuals. (Laughter.) Continuing in more serious strain, the Minister pointed out that while in an election fight the political element was usually paramount, minor issues were sometimes deciding factors. Some people held that five or six represented a sufficient wording majority. That margin, he believed, was not wide enough, and even in the Reform Partv there were members who became disgruntled. Tn his opinion the issue he had mentioned would be met as it had been in the past.
