CRIPPLING SHIPPING AND 1 MINING TRADES

The “no overtime” strike of Australian waterside workers is having a serioiis effect on other industries and if the dis> pute is not speedily settled the shipping and coal mining trades will be crippled.

By Telegraph.— Press Association. COPYIUGHT. Sydney, November 29. The crane employees at Newcastle have decided to strike as a protest against the action of the Railway Commissioners in serving notice of dismissal on 86 crane employees. The union’s action will have the effect of completely crippling the shipping trade of the port, and within a week forcing, the management of nearly every 'colliery on the northern fields to shut down the mines. The dismissal of the crane employees is due to the operation of the “no overtime strike,” the coal trimmers ceasing work at 4 o’clock in the afternoon instead of working 24 hours, daily. There is not sufficient work to justify the retention of the services of crane drivers. (Rec. Noverqber 29, 8.30 p.m.) Sydney, November 29. As a result of the crane-drivers’ strike the"’ port of Newcastle is at a standstill. Fifteen steamers are waiting for coal.i If the dispute is not settled speedily work at the collieries will be seriously inconvenienced and some of them cbmpelled to cease operations. VESSELS DELAYED AT SYDNEY Sydney, November 29. No developments occurred in connection with the “no overtime strike” at the week-end. The effects of the strike are now being more seriously felt and many vessels are delayed.
