OBITUARY
MR. WILLIAM H. E. WANKLYN

Advice has been received of the death at Montreal (Canada) on his way home from a pleasure trip abroad of Mr. William Henry Endell Wanklyn, who for many years had been a conspicuous figure in the racing world of New Zealand. From 1890 to 1920 the late Mr. Wanklyn was secretary to the Canterbury Jockey Club. He began his business life as a bank clerk at Hawera, and he then became a commission agent. In 1889 he was appointed secretary to the Egmont Racing Club. Not long after his pen was responsible for the introduction of many reforms in the sport. The formation of the New Zealand Jockey Club to take control of racing, the revision of rules, the publication of a monthly calendar, forming a board to decide on appeals, registration control, etc., were part of the work of Mr. Wanklyn. He ‘also undertook to publish the New Zealand Stud Book on behalf of the Racing Conference, and he personally* supervised the issue. The late Mr. Wanklyn was born in 1858 in Monmouthshire', and was married in 1889 to a daughter of the Rev. Canon Gould, of Otahuhu. One son was killed in the Great War, and Mr. D. E. Wanklyn, another son, is a well known lawyer in Christchurch. Mrs. Wanklvn died in 1924.
