POLICE AND BY-LAW CASES. Palmerston North, November 29. A sitting of the Magistrate’s Court was held this morning betore Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M.. wheu police and by-law cases were dealt with. Richard Henry Hodges pleaded guilty to a charge of driving a motor-car at a dangerous speed in Rangitikei Street and was fined .£l, with costs j:2 19s. A fine of X2 with costs 7s. was imposed on James McCloy for being found unlawfully on licensed premises at ShanPatluro to notify the defence authorities of his change of address cost Percy W. Ross- 16s. and costs 7s. On a charge of cycling at night without a tight, Frederick Oldaker and A. Missen were each ordered to pay 10s. and costs 2s. A penalty of X 5. with costs <s.. was imposed on William Pollard for having no silencer on his motor-car. Harry Payton who was found on licensed premises after hours was fined £1 and costs 15s. , James W. Blumont and Louts M. Schultz were each fined .£2 and costs 7s. for fishing for trout in the Manawatu river without a license while for taking a hare in the close season, Joseph Lewis was similarly dealt with. K. Olsen was.mulcted in the sum of ,£1 with costs 7s. for allowing stock io wander. , ... . , John McCarthy was charged with riding a motor-cycle negligently in Nap’er Road, and also with having no lights on the machine. It was stated that defendant had crashtjd into.a car, both vehicles being damaged. When interviewed later, defendant stated that he had been leaning over endeavouring to adjust his light, which was not tunc tinning properly, and thus did not see where ho was going. Defendant, for whom Mr. Cooper appeared was fined £2 and costs 155., on the first charge. The second count was withdrawn. MARTON SITTING. Marton, November 29. Tbe sitting of the Marton Magistrate’s Court was held on Friday, Mr. R. M. Watson, S.M., presiding. For being off licensed premises after hours without lawful excuse, W. Knox and R A. Whale were convicted and fined £1 10s. each, M. Smith was fined j£2. and A. Whale £1 10s. On the information of the Rangitikei County traffic inspector (Mr. H. J. Fowler), W. Jones and Co., carriers, of Wanganui, were charged with, a breach of the motor-lorrv regulations by overloading. A fine of £2 and costs was inflicted. Similarly charged (his second cffencei. W. Werefa was fined £3 and costs. Thomas McGregor proceeded against R. Collie, claiming £4O general damages and £6 18s. fid. special damages for assault. Evidence disclosed that plaintiff was manager of the Marton Co-operative Stores and defendant was in bis employ. The alleged assault took place upon the latter’s dismissal. The Magistrate awarded damages ns follow: General damages. £10; special damages, £5 18s fid., with court costs £7. CARTERTON SITTING. Carterton, November 29. The monthly sitting of the Carterton Magistrate's Court was held to-day before Mr. A. M. Mowlem, S'.M. Judgment by default wa.s entered in the following undefended civil cases: Hart, Tucker and Daniell v. P. F Ryan, £ll Is., costs £2 Hs.; R. N. Wallis v. E. Cook, £9 Is. (id. costs £1 Bs. fid.; Carterton Borough Council v. R. F. Billington. 12s fir]., costs 11s.; same v: J Salisbury £L costs £1 3s. fid.; Geo. Steven v. F. Sewell. £3 Ss. 5d.. costs £1 3s. fid. On a judgment' claim, H. B. Thomas v. J Ashton (Greytown), for £l9 3s„ an order was made for payment by consent of 5s per month, to commence December 1. , No order was made in the claim of W C Deller against Philip Kingi, for £8 Is. 3d. A first offender for drunkenness, was convicted and fined 10s. J. B. Miller, for cycling at night . without a light, was fined 10s. and 7s. . costs. Alice Kempton proceeded auninst Geor-e Walter Kempton, on a maintenance claim. An order was tunde for the payment of 12s fid per week.
