CALEDONIAN CARNIVAL
OFFICIAL OPENING TO-NIGHT. Unfavourable weather on Saturday afternoon prevented the official opening of tlte Caledonian Carnival at the Kilbivnie Reserve. The cetemon.v will he performed this everting at 8 by the Mayor, Mr. C. J. B. Norwood, Sir John Luke, M.P., and the Chief, Captain R. H. Nimino. The Object of the carnival is to raise funds for the building of an up-to-date hall in Wellington, The various sports bodies, clubs, societies, and kindred organisations are all giving willing assistance, and included among the attractions Will be a spectacular fireworks display by Chinese residents, a boxing tournament under the ausnices of the Wellington Boxing Association, yacht and motor-boat racing bv the Evans Bay Yacht and Molor-boat Club, life-saving displays and competitions by the various surf clubs, and tugs-of-war between re presentatives of tho various.commercial and industrial houses. There will be plenty of side-shows, many of them from the Dunedin Exhibition. At night, the grounds will be brilliantly lighted, and bands will be in attendance. Nightly dances, with a full jazz orchestra, are expected to prove very popular with th? younger people. The pavilion will also be the scene of two fancy dress dances for children.
