A three-roomed dwelling, situated in White’s Line, Lower Hutt, near the stop bank, owned by the Public Works Department, and occupied by Mr. Davidson and family, was totally destroyed by fire at 1.30 yesterday morning. When Mr. Davidson discovered the outbreak it already had a good hold, and he could do nothing more than rescue his family. The brigade answered quickly, but the call was too late to be effective. Mr. Davidson is employed by the Public Works Department, being the driver of a steam navvy. The cause of the fire has not yet been ascertained. OUTBREAK IN BOX FACTORY. Dominion Special. Dunedin, November 29. A fire broke out this evening in the box factory of the “Evening Star’’ Company, but was suppressed before any great damage was done. The stock and machinery in the portion concerned are valued at about £14,000. The greatest loss will result from smoke and water, and from tlie set-back that must result. The company was working at high pressure in an endeavour to cover the Christmas demand, a task made no easier by the destruction of the Phoenix Company’s plant recently. The “Star” Company had taken over the other company’s work. The buildings and contents are insured in fifteen different companies for sums totalling £18,150.

Be prepared. See that you have adequate fire insurance. Consult the Mercantile and General Insurance Co., Ltd., Panama Street, Wellington.— Advt.
