NGAIO v. SOUTH WELLINGTON

The annual match between the Ngaio and South Wellington Clubs was played ■in the Ngaio Town Hall on Saturday evening, and ended in a tie, as follows:

The score at the first six boards was “three all,” and each club thus gains half a point for the senior teams’ tourney of the Wellington Chess League. At the conclusion of the contest Mr. G. P. Anderson returned thanks for the kind hospitality of the tiom.e team. THE WELLINGTON LEAGUE. The Wellington Chess Club has won the league’s senior and junior teams’ tourneys, the match points scored being as follow:—In the senior contest: Wellington C.C. 3, South Wellington 11, Working Men’s Club 1, and Ngaio J; and in the junior teams’ tourney: Wellington C.C. 3, Working Men’s Club 1J ; Ngaio 1, and South Wellington j. The two-round tourney between the four club champions now stands as follows :— To

The five outstanding games are fixtures of Mr. R. J. Barnes, who is on the sick list at present. NGAIO CLUB. Mr. W. J. Hicks is leading in the current tourney for the championship of the Ngaio C.C.. his tally being 3 wins, 1 draw, and 3 more games to .play. Others well to the fore are: F. J. Brooker 21 —J, E. E. Hicks 2—l, and A. B. Topp "2j—lJ. Mr. liereward Topp has a good lead for the club’s junior championship, with 5 wins, 1 draw and 4 to play. The next best scores are:—E. W. Ford 41—21, J. A. Glasgow 3J-2J. IL Prince 5—3. A. T. Eades 4—3. W. Fink 3}—3.4, C. Glenday 3—3, and H. Stringer 3-3.'

There are fourteen competitors in the club's annua) handicap tourney, the best tallies to date being as follow:—C. Glenday B—2, J. A Glasgow 5—2, W. J. Hicks 41—3 J. H. Topp G-4. E. E. Hicks 5—4. F. J- Brooker 5 —4, A. H. Gibson 5—5, W. Fink 4J—4J, and A. T. Eades 4 —4. Each competitor has to account for 13 games. CHAMPIONSHIP OF NEW ZEALAND. Mr. S. Crakanthorp, of Sydney, New South Wales, who is champion of Australia and also of New Zealand, will not bo able to defend tho latter title nt the Auckland congress next inpnth. This information was contained in a letter from the champion received by a local enthusiast last week. Messrs._ A. W. Gvle« (AVellington), E. E. Hicks (Ngaio), and Dirk Pihl (Canterbury C.C.) will also be notable aljsentces. On the other hand, Mr. L. Pleasants, the Wanganui champion, intends to compete on this occasion, and the entry list will probably include some ot New Zealand s enthusiasts who are at the moment labelled “doubtful.”
