THE RACING WORLD
TAKAPUNA MEETING—ALISON CUP WON BY RUAPAPA
NOTES AND COMMENTS
NOTES AND COMMENTS (By “The Watcher.”) Acceptances for all first day’s events at tile Woodville summer meeting will close on Friday at 9 p.m. The telegraph office at Woodville closes at 8 p.m. Nominations for all events at the summer meeting of the Manawatu Racing Club and first forfeits for the 21st Palmerston North Stakes will close on Friday at 9 p.m. The spring meeting ot the Feilding Jockey Club will be held to-morrow 1 and on Wednesday, the first race each day starting at 11.30 a.m. As a result of accidents in hurdle events at Takapuna meetings the stewards decided to eliminate such races from the future programmes and at the spring meeting now in progress replaced them with high-weight handicaps It is rather disconcerting to read that two horses fell in this particular race on Saturday. The inquiry found that the incident was accidental, but it is unfortunate that there should have been a recurrence of the trouble on this course. Favourites got a very sound thrashing at Takapuna on Saturday. The heavy going no doubt had a good deal to do with the upset in form, but on the Shore course surprises are not unusual. Ruapapa, who won the Alison Cup at Takapauna on Saturday, was successful in the same race 12 months ago, when he beat Polonett and Musketoon Ruapapa showed no form at all this season up till Saturday, having had five starts for no result. In the early part of last winter, when he retired until the present season, he was showing good form, winning in his last two starts. The state of the track on Saturday would materially assist the winner, who is a strongly built gelding. Archeen, who won the sprint event at Takapuna on Saturday, was making his first appearance after an absence of a couple of months He ran third in the sprint event on the opening day of the Marton spring ' meeting, and the following week at Wanganui was second to Tiega over seven furlongs, also running on the concluding day in the open sprint. While not by anv means in the first flight. Archeen wins his share of races, and last season his stake earnings went just over four figures, while the previous year he won £l2BO 10s
The English mare Glentruin arrived from the south on Saturday morning and went on to Feilding, where she is engaged to-morrow in the Feilding Stakes. She will be ridden by F. C. Porter. Glentruin’s holiday programme has not yet been definitely decided. She is entered at Auckland, but a decision will probably be reached after it is seen how she shapes to-morrow Some of the races at Awapuni and the district New Year meetings would be easier for her. To-morrow she will be up against stiff opposition. Road Hog, who finished fourth in the Ashhurst Cup last week, will be ridden in the Feilding Cup by J. S. Potter.
Master Sandstone, whq fell from a high place amongst gallopers through becoming affected in the wind, has been turned out of training, and may be disposed of as a hack
At Hawera last week there were one or two good gallops registered by horses prominently engaged at Feilding. The Lamb was responsible for a good effort over seven furlongs in Imin. Ro|sec., being assisted bv a couple of companions during the gallop Over the same distance Enare and Euphonium registered Imin 31 see Ladv Cavendish gave Lady Bentinck a couple of lengths start over half-a-mile, and beat her home bv a length in 4945ec., the best gallop on the track this spring The Hawera track is not a fast one from the time point of view, and the above were all excellent efforts.
Wanganui reports state that unless the track is firm Lvsander will not be a starter in the Fe'lding Stakes. Rose of Athens /Demosthenes—Rose Shield) .foaled a black colt on Thursday east to Thomond. He is the second of Tliomond’s progeny to put in an appearance.
Civility will be ridden in the Feiklfng Cup bv B H Morris. If Mimetic does not start R Reed will be on Indian Sage The latter galloped well over six furlongs on the grass at Trentham on Saturday morning, taking Imin ISJsec. Mr E L. Riddiford has purchased the Trillion fillv which J W. Lowe brought back from Sydney’ on his last trip. She w’as galloped at Trentham on Saturday morning.
Zarisee had her first gallop’ on Saturday since she took up her quarters at Trentham, and she went particularly well.
Laughing Prince, the winner of the A R.C Welcome Stakes, is being kept going in vigw of bis meeting with Cimabue in Auckland on Boxing Dav On Saturday he sprinted half-a-mile with a companion in the smart time of 49sec.
Orchid, who is to race at Feilding, sprinted half-a-mile on Saturday morning in his usual smart stvle. Modern has left H Telford’s stable, and is now being trained bv A. Goodman Modern and Cerf will be taken to Feilding. The Trentham horses will leave for Feilding fo-dav S Reid will take Indian Sage, Grand Knight, Spode, and Panther. On Saturday Grand Knight galloped five furlongs. He was slow over the first half, but ran the last half in 49Jsec. Lady Passenger, who was taken to the New Zealand Cup meeting, but owing to a cold returned without racing, is again amongst the active brigade at Trentham, having fully recovered.
Queen's Choice is still bn the sick list, the attack of influenza which he contracted at Trentham having been more serious than was at first thought. He may not be seen in action again for some time This is very bad luck for Mr. Haldane, for the Clarenceux three-year-old showed excellent form at the early spring meetings and promised to turn out much above the average. The Absurd—Finery gelding Attractive lias been sold by Mr. L. G. Paul to a Waihi sportsman. Attractive displayed a good deal of pace on some occasions, but his performances were disappointing. It is probable he will be put to hurdling, at which he might do well. Money Order has been taken in hand again bv T. H. Gillett, after a short spell, it is unlikely that he will be raced during the holidays, but it is hoped he will be at his best in the autumn He is verv speedy when well, and he will make matters inter-' esting in important events later in tire season, provided he gets through a preparation. A Reefton sporting writer states that the last has not been heard of the Maunu case, which will be reopened bv the Greymouth District Committee at an early date. This was the affair in which four out of five.riders in the Hurdles at Reefton bn January 8 last were/ disqualified. The New Zealand-bred mare Ilka continues to race well on Sydney pony cnnr'es. At a recent meeting at Victoria Park the officials decided to substitute A. Stanton for Ilka’s regular pilot T McKenzie, when the New Zealand mare was produced to contest the Firing Handicap Apparently the stewards did not anprove of the position occupied bv Ilka in the Retting Ilka was at 7 to 1, with a tendency to recede but when the change of iocl-evs was made Ilka firmed to 5 to 2. The rare was won bv the odds-on favourite, Wallace Bower, who beat Ilka by a length and a nuarter. At the Newmarket meeting last mrm*h St-nlrl tbv A Word- -Musk), a two-vear-old half-brother to the Auck-lond-owned horse Mnsketoon. won the Pons Memorial S'r>l-cs,« beating a field of a dozen opponents, TAKAPUNA MEETING FIRST DAY’S RESULTS ALISON CUP TO RUAPAPA By Tblegbjph.— Press association Auckland, November 27 The Takapuua Jockey Club’s spring meeting opened to-day in wet weather, which considerably affected the attendance. The Takapuna Jockey Club’s spring meeting opened to-day in wretched weather conditions, and the course was very heavy. The attendance was fairly good. There was a big field in the Melrose Handicap. The bracket Te Kawana and Town Bird was about £bo better backed than Royal Picture, while King Zone was next fancied. The start was a straggling one, some of the competitors having had little experience at the barrier. Dimmer and Harbour View were the early pilots, but they had not gone a furlong before Dimmer and Town Bird were in charge, with Royal Picture, Arch Queen, Cantab, Sir Gilbert, and Kyngzone next. Crossing the top, Town Bird, Dimmer, Royal Picture, Arch Queen, and Cantab were well clear of the others. Town Bird and Cantab were first to turn for home from Royal Picture, Bahama, and Dimmer. Arch Queen went on to win by a length and a half from Town Bird, who beat Cantab by two lengths. Bahama, Harbour View, Te Kawana, Dimmer, Abbey Day, Wander Star, and Roj-al Picture were next.
Pentagram and Lord Bruce were scratched for the Tiri High-weight Handicap, and Royal Form was entrusted with about £l2O more than Pouri. while Wedding March was next best backed The field had only gone about a furlong when Daddy’s Girl and Wedding March fell Fair Abbey led past the stands from Black Cruiser, Sea Comet, Hangawera, and Pouri. Along the back Kamehameha had improved his position, but Pouri was last. He, however, began to move up crossing the top, and entering the straight was fourth to Royal Form, Black Cruiser, and Fair Abbey. His rider then brought him along, but though he headed Royal Form in the last few strides he failed by half a length to reach Black Cruiser. Royal Form was a neck away third, with i,Sea Comet. Kamehameha and Hangawera next If Pouri had not been kept so far back in the earlv stages he appeared as though he would have won. R. Nixon, the rider of Daddy’s Girl, was rendered unconscious through striking the rail as he fell, but later recovered
Nine went to the post for the Borough Handicap, and Archibald was about £2OO better backed than , Le Choucas with Ring the Bel! next fancied. Le Choucas and Archibald were the leaders for most of the way, while Namutere and New. Moon were also handy. Le Choucas retired at the top of the straight, and Archibald, Namutere, and New Moon were most prominent when they straightened up for home, with Ring the Bell next. New Moon then took charge and won nicely by a couple of lengths from Namutere, who beat Archibald by a length and a half. Ring the Bell, Thursby, Le Choucas, Arch Arnie, Muscari, and Uralla finished as named. Namntere was recently sold bv Mr E. W Alison, jun., to Messrs. Todd and Porter, who own Nancy Lee. and he raced in their colours to-day.
After doing his preliminary Nippv was allowed to be withdrawn from the Alison Cup on account of the going, and the totalisator investments were refunded. Tresham carried over £3OO more than Master Doon, while Desert Glow and Town Bank were the best backed of the others, Ruapapa practically led from start to finish and won easily. Spoony, Desert Glow, Master Doon, Tresham, and Princess Ronnie were most handy to him running along the straight, while along the back the order of the leaders was much the same. Boomerday showed up as thev commenced to cross the top and before the straight was reached the favourite had dropped back. Ruapapa was in front of Spoony, Desert Glow, and Boomerdav at this stage, and went on to win comfortably by three lengths from Spoonv, who beat Boomerdav by half a length. Master Doon, Transformer, Desert Glow, Town Bank, Princess Ronnie, and Lord Star were next, with Tresham last. Ruapapa was successful in the Alison Cup twelve months ago. The scratching pen was used freelv in the Cambria Handicap, a two-vear-old event. High Finance, Chips, Whakarite, Standfast and Golden Wedding failing to keep their engagements. Ti Tree was a warm favourite, carrying about a third of the investments, while Auriculas was entrusted with about half as much as Ti Tree, Carinthia coming in for most attention of the others. Carinthia, who was fractious at the post, got out best, but soon lost his position, Exalted, Lorna Doon, and Ariliana heading him before half a furlong had been covered, and Lorna Doon took charge before the straight was reached from Exalted, Arihana, Ti Tree, Auriculas, and Carinthia. Lorna Doon had little difficulty in winning by three lengths and a half from Exalted, who beat Ti Tree by threequarters of a length. Ariliana,' Aurien--Ins, and Carinthia were next. The winner is a half-sister to Master Doon' bv Tea Tray, and was making her first public appearance. It was also the first time Arihana (Sir Dighton— Quaver) had raced. It is stated that a good price was refused for Lorna Doon prior to the meeting. In the Takapuna Plate, Tinokoa was about £2OO better backed than Ruffles, while True Blood and Delighttuent were next in demand. Delightment was the early leader, but Ned Kelly soon ran to the front, and led along . the back from Delightment, Tinokoa, Ruffles, King Smock, and True Blood. Before the turn was reached Ruffles had run up to the leaders and piloted the field into the straight from Tinokoa, Delightment, Ned Kelly, and True Blood. Ruffles went on to win easily by a length and a half from True Blood, who beat Delightment by threequarters pf a length. Ned Kelly was fourth, with Tinakoa, Rahepoto, Vulcan, War Officer, Luxurious, Dobbin, Adjuster, Quinsilia, and King Selwyn next.
Schorr, Judge’s Box, and Nassock were scratched for the Pounui Handicap, leaving a field of eight. Quondoug carried about £lOO more than Wendy, while Golden Krist was next in request. Bracken Abbey’ made the pace through die straight from Air Queen, Maveelish, and Bizarro. Along the back Bracken Abbey was attended bv Maveelish, Blue Sky, Air Queen, Bizarro, Wendy, and Quondong. Wendy improved her position running across the top and entering the straight was lying third to Maveelish and Golden Krist, while Blue Sky an.! Quondong were next In a good finish Wendv won by three-quarters of a length' from Golden Krist, with Maveelish half a length further back. Blue Sky, Quondong. Bizarro and Air Queen were next. " j 0 the Cheltenham Handicap Hoarirf was about £l5O better backed than Nancy Lee, while Dave, and Archeen were next fancied. Archeen and Pavo
led along the back from Value, King Merv, Nancy- Lee, Yorn Abbey and Dave. Archeen was first to turn for home from Dave, York Abbey, and King Merv, and went on to win byhalf a length from Dave, who beat King Merv “by two lengths and a half.
