BRITISH SAILORS' SOCIETY

A BUSY WEEK. The workers of tho British Sailors’ Society have liad a particularly busy time during last week entertaining tho men who follow the tea, On Sunday, November 21, a large number assembled to listen to the very stirring address by tho Bev. Lowe. This was followed by the song service at 8.30 p.m., when the men entered into the singing of their favourite hymns with a zeal that was good to listen to. On Monday a farewell social evening l was tendered to the men of the Tamaroa. Practically the whole of the ship’s company attended, and a very pleasant time spent with music, games and instrumental items. Supper was handed round by the young ladies of the society, and the evening brought to a close at 10.30 p.m. with the singing of 'Auld Lang Syne.” On Tuo-day the society and men we;e indebted to Mr. Gardiner, of Petone, for a very entertaining gramophone evening. This was heartily enjoyed by the large number present, and was quite an innovation to the society’s usual activities, and was much appreciated. On Wednesday tho half-yearly r.o’jcert in aid of funds for providing Christmas cheer for tho seamen in port was held. The programme was kindly arranged bv Mr. V. Jones. Each item was one of merit, and was very much enjoyed by those present. The chair on this occasion was occupied by the president of the society, Mr. C. D. Morpeth, "’ho with a few well-chosen words explained the aims and objects of the society for the care and uplift of the men who follow the sea. One item that was much appreciated was that given bt Mr. I rank Andrews. The large audience ‘eemea ns though they could not hare enough, ana encored again and again The items ay the orchestra were of a order that coma be heard repeatedly . Artists contributing items were ns follow: urchestra, under the leadership of Mr. Cummings, Misses Myra Sawyer. Whitehouse, and Bird, Messrs. Burridge, W. Sweet, Bobins, A. Kemp, James, tai Jones. Price, and Erank Andrews Mrs. Wakeling was the accompanist tor t-ne evening. On Thursday another concert was arranged by the chairman of the entertainment committee, who also on tntoccasion occupied the chair, the large number that were present enjoyed eye 5 item, and demanded encore after encore. Supper was served during the inteiya_ arid another very pleasant evening w< brought to a close-with a vote of than . to those who had been the menus of providing such a hapny time.
