A GOLD CUPS ADVENTURE
HIDDEN UNDER TONS OF COAL Dominion Special. Auckland, November 28. The gold cud which formed the attached to this year’s Takapuna Plate, which was won by Mr. D. lye with his gelding Ruffles on Saturday, has an interesting history. While it was lining brought to New Zealand from England in a cargo steamer some members of tho crew removed the cup from the case in which it was enclosed.. On the disappearance of the cup being reported. the matter was placed in the hands of the police, and a clue was furnished by one of the crew. While in a state of intoxication this seaman made a statement in the presence of a detective, with the result that a search in one of the coal bunkers of the steamer revealed the missing cup, which had been covered by tons of coal. Tho cup was subsequently exhibited at tho Dunedin Exhibition. The trophy is a reproduction of the famous gold cup made in 1481 and which is held by Pembroke College, Cambridge.
