TEST CRICKETERS
BONUS PROPOSAL.
(Rec. November 26, 7.5 p.m.) London, November 26.
The “Daily Express” gives prominence to a cablegram from its Melbourne correspondent, referring to a bonus proposal for test cricketers, quoting the assertion of some Australian cricketers who have returned “broke,” and comparing Hirst’s £3OOO from the benefit match with the treatment of Ernie Jones, who is stated to be working on the Adelaide wharves, and George Giffen, who is holding a minor job in the post office. The “Express” in a footnote says: “It is necessary to remember that Australians come as amateurs, and are accorded all the privileges of amateur status, whereas Hirst, a professional, depended on the game for a livelihood.”
