new ZEALAND’S SELECTION FOR 1927 TWO SONS OF SCHOOLMASTERS The selection was made yesterday of the two New Zealand Rhodes scholars for 1927, when the choice fell upon: A. L. Haslam (Canterbury). W. G. Kalaugher (Wellington). The eight candidates, two from each province, appeared before the Board of Selection in Wellington yesterday, each being interviewed. By a coincidence, both the successful candidates are sons of State schoolmasters, who both rose to be inspectors. MR. KALAUGHER’S CAREER. Wilfrid George Kalaugher is a son of Mr. J. P. Kalaugher, of Wellington. He was born on November 26, 1901, and was educated at Winchester School (South Canterbury), 1910; Stanley Bay School (Auckland), 1911-15, Sacred Heart College (Auckland), 1916-21; Auckland University College, 1922-24; and Victoria University College, 192526. He obtained a proficiency certificate at Stanley Bay School in 1915, and passed the junior national scholarship at the Sacred Heart College the following year. While at the same college, he passed the Senior National Scholarship in 1918; the matriculation, solicitor’s general knowledge, and medical preliminary in 1919; and was first in the Public Service entrance in New Zealand and dux of the college in 1920. In 1921 he was again dux of the college, passed the junior university scholarship, won the Old Bovs’ Association essay, secured English and mathematics prizes, and was sub-editor of the college magazine. In 1922, at Auckland University College, he secured the first section 8.A., in English, Latin, pure mathematics, and the first section B.Sc., in phvsics and applied mathematics, and also secured the college premium in mathematics. In 1923 he passed the second section B.A. in French and history, and took terms in first year in
advanced mathematics. In 1924 he passed the second section B.Sc. in chemistry, the final B.A. in advanced mathematics, was proxime accessit senior scholar in mathematics, and took terms first year in advanced physics. In 1925, at Victoria University College, he passed his M.A. degree, with first class honours in mathematics. This year he is sitting for final B.Sc. in advanced physics. In all the university degree examinations for which he has sat, including eight pass subjects, one advanced, and one honours, the average percentage he obtained has '"been 75. He gained first-class passes in terms or degree in English, Latin, French, mathematics, history, and physics. In the honours mathematics papers he gained full marks in two and 97 per cent, in another, averaging a fraction under 90 per cent., while in advanced mathematics papers he was top in New Zealand in each of the two pure mathematics papers. In the athletic field Mr. Kalaugher is acknowledged bv competent judges to rank equal with J. W. Shirley, of Auckland, as the Dominion’s best all-round jumper and hurdler. At the New Zealand championships in March, 1926, he bettered the New Zealand standard in three events—the high jump, hop, step and jump, and 120 yards hurdles. His best performances are High jump, sft. 10} in.; long jump, 22ft. 4in.; hop, step and jump, 45ft. Ilin.; 120 yards hurdles, 15 4-ssec. He played Rugby with the Wellington University Club, and last season gained a place, in a representative senior trial game. For the past two seasons Mr. Kalaugher has been on the staff of Wellington College, where his duties include coaching, a cricket and football team, managing the cross-country running, and giving instruction in boxing. He intends devoting his time at Oxford to the study of mathematics and actuarial science. MR. HASLAM’S ATTAINMENTS. Alec Leslie Haslam, LL.M., was bom on February 10, 1904, being a son of Mr. C. N. Haslam, inspector of schools, of Christchurch. He was educated at the Island Bay School (Wellington), Wellington College (1917-19), Waitaki Bovs’ High School (1920-21), and Canterbury College (1922-26). He took his LL.M, degree, with first-class honours
(trusts, Roman law, contracts, and torts), in 1925, at Canterbury College. Since commencing his studies at Canterbury College he has been employed continuously in legal offices. He was on the staff of Air. Justice Alpers until January, 1925, and since then has been on the common law staff of Air. C. S. Thomas, of Christchurch. In athletics Mr. Haslam is an oarsman, representing the Canterbury Rowin" Club at the Christchurch regatta in the light-weight maiden fours in 1923, and also rowing in the youths’ double sculls at the Christchurch regatta the ‘following vear. He has also taken an active part in track running, harriers, golf and tennis He was admitted as a barrister and solicitor at Christchurch in T/zS.
