TWO CASES IN CHRISTCHURCH,

Christchurch, November 26. A man who was charged with taking a book from the Public Library this week gave a feasible explanation ana the case was dismissed to-day. Lillian Alanson, a young woman who had taken books from the Public Library without having them entered in the library register, was charged at the Magistrate’s Court with stealing two books valued at 12s. . . i z The chief librarian said that defendant was a subscriber to the library. On the night of November 5 she entered the library soon after 6 o’clock and he watched her till 8 o’clock. Her downfall .was new books, and while witness was watching he saw her remove two books and wait for an opportunity to leave the building. He followed her and questioned her about the matter Defendant said she was waiting outside for her mother.. After hearing further evidence, the Magistrate; Mri H P. Lawrv, said: “t don’t think this.case warrants a con-, viction, but the defendant brought the prosecution on herself.” Mr. Lascelles (for /’pendant) : Would Your Worship surmress the name in this case, as in the other?—“No. In the other case there were special reasons for suppression of the name,”
