THE RACING WORLD

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By "The Watcher.”) Nominations lor all events at the Christmas meeting of the Westport Trotting Club will close on Thursday, December 2, at 8 p.m. The writer was informed at Ashhurst that Glenross will be ridden in the Feilding Cup by L. G. Morris, who will do the future riding for Tilley’s stable when the weights allow. Another report states that Morris has been engaged for Te Monanui at Auckland. The Absurd-Black Ada colt was left in the Feilding Stakes in error. T/ Lloyd was to have taken him up on his return from Christchurch, but he ran a nail into his foot, and he will not be able to race for a while.

Cerf did very little galloping between the Wellington and Ashhurst meetings owing to bruising a heel and picking up a nail. Yet on Wednesday he won comfortably, which is an indication of his superiority. Cerf looks like improving a great deal upon his already useful efforts.

Kihnezzo before he could be pulled up galloped right round into the back stretch again after passing the winning post on Wednesday. He is improving with every race, and should soon be heard of again.

Blood Red is a useful sort of hack hurdler. Like all horses bred by Mr. J Bull, he was soundly educated as a jumper, and he completely eclipsed llis opponents at this part of the business on Wednesday. Blood Red looks as if he would improve a good deal. Mr. J. McKelvie came in for hearty congratulations on his win.

Polyastra shaped at Ashhurst as if he would make good over hurdles. White Ringlet, winner of the Maiden Race at Ashhurst, is by the Australianbred sire Some Boy 11. from Winning Lady, a mare by Kilwinning, out of Agneta by Seaton Delaval from a Bill of Portland mare. White Ringlet is a shapely filly and knows how to gallop. Gold Box had not been on the tracks for the best part of a week prior to Ashhurst, owing to going lame. Consequently be did well to run so prominently in the Pohangina Handicap. Prior to the Ashhurst Cup Kilfaire had not been a winner since October of last year, when he dead-heated with Tresham in the Masterton Cup. It was therefore very pleasing to Ms connections to have him show a return to form on Wednesday after the perseverance and incidentally to win a handsome trophy

Pangolin’s effort in the Ashhurst Cup suggests that he is a better horse than even his winning efforts have shown. He must' have been very hard to beat in the race if he had got away on terms with the field. Nukumai must rank as one of the most versatile performers of recent years. In the first flight of hurdlers, lie has pace enough to hold' his own with fairly good class horses on the flat, and appears equally at home in each class of event. While he did not make a success as a steeplechaser he won in his first attempt over big country.

Horomea, who is now trained at Woodville by J. Sullivan, was too big in condition to race prominently at Ashhurst, but she should not be long in improving. Monaghan is something out of the ordinary. He was responsible for an impressive effort at Ashhurst, for despite being well back at the start he can be said to have had the race won five furlongs from home. He should prove hard to beat again in his next few engagements. The majority of the racing public must be poor judges of form, or else careless of what occurs in previous events. Aurataura on Wednesday was always in the picture in the open sprint, and finished a good fouth. Yet four races later he was allowed to got out paying a substantial dividend. He struck something good in Monaghan, but he disposed of the remainder of the field.

Bonhomme has paid for himself now so far as his present connections are concerned, and there does not appear any reason why lie should not go on winning. F. Davis has had trouble with his team owing to colds. He will probably make the Christmas trip to Auckland after Woodville with Auratum, Gascony, Oreum, Magna Cliarta, and possibly with others, including the Grey Monk two-year-old filly. He has also a filly by Lucullus—d’Oro, thus halfsister to Moorland.

Brigadier Bill bad his first race on Wednesday since he “also started” in the Ladies’ Bracelet on the second day of the Marton meeting last September. He should not be long in returning to the winning list. In eight starts this season General Wai had been four times second and twice third. It is rather exasperating luck for his connections but he may soon be a winner.

Loughrca is pleasing his trainer, and the Salisbury champion will probably line up with some of the fields at the approaching holiday meetings. Chickwheat has rejoined 11. Nurse’s active division. He is very backward at present, but he should be ready to show form again early in the New Year. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes will shortly be represented at race meetings in Canterbury He has placed a three-year-old gelding by Clareneeux from a Boniform mare with F. P. Claridge. G. Murray Aynsley is working Footfall and Paperchase the reverse way at Riccarton, and it is probable that they will go north (or the Auckland Racing Chib’s meeting. The two-vear-ohls. Agrion and Eulalie, are among the reverse workers at Riccarton, anil they may represent Mr G D. Greenwood at the Auckland summer meeting. Though F. Christinas withdrew Fresco from the Auckland Cup, lie still claims other engagements at the meeting. It is almost certain that be will do his holidav racing in the North Island, either at the Auckland or the Manawatu meeting.

Though Limerick is not doing any work on the tracks, lie will be kept in light exercise while his foot heals from the trouble which affected him in Australia.

The three-year-old Battlement is bowling along freelv in his tasks. He is booked for a trip north for the Auck 'and Racing Chib’s summer meeting, where he will be the onlv representative of F D Jones’s stable Glentruin figures as an acceptor for the Feilding Stakes. A definite deci

sion concerning the trip will be arrived at during the ’next few days. 11. Nurse has Rapier going on well in liis work. He will be racing at the South Canterbury meeting next month, while his holiday campaign will be done at the Manawatu and Marton meetings. His form at Riccarton was encouraging, and he should pay his way during the northern trip.
