FARMING INTERESTS FIREBLIGHT PORT ALBERT ORCHARDS ATTACKED. Dominion Special. Auckland, November 25. • Fireblight, which caused much damage to Auckland orchards tour or five years ago, has not been entirely eradicated, but is still making periodic attacks in various parts. Ino “Herald” c.orrespondent at Port Albert reports that a number of trees there have had to be destroyed and a good deal of fruit will be lost through blossom infection. In reply to an inquiry, Mr. W. H. Rice, orchard inspector for the Department of Agriculture, stated that he had been at Port Albert this week and had visited an orchard in which trees had had to be rooted out. It was to be expected that disease would occur spasmodically at this time of year, as it bad done ever since the epidemic, it was in a milder form and was likely to on attacking susceptible varieties so Ton" ns thev were retained Recently there had been a considerable outbreak in Hawke’s Bay, where it had not previously boon found and Inst season there had been one at Thames. Mr. Rice added that the disease was more or less an accepted evil, but it was not so pievalent. as to work serious harm in commercial orchards. WHANGAREI SHOW PRINCIPAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. LONDON WOOL AND TALLOW SALES POSTPONED OWING TO FOG. London, November 24. The wool sales were postponed owing to fog, and no tallow sales were held. The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram, dated November 24, from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, London:—Wool sales commenced yesterday (Tuesday) with large representative attendance and fair competition, principally from German and Home trade. Compared with last closing rates, merino 5 per cent, to H per cent., and crossbred 5 per cent, lower; 136.000 bales available for series, of which 74,000 Australian and 53,000 New Zealand. Messrs. Dalgcty and Company. Limited, report having received the following cablegram from their London house, under date November 24:—“N0..w00l sales have been held to-day owing to thick fog." Wools lacking quality, and showing dust and burr were very irregula-. Comebacks and crossbrdes were unchanged in price. Greasv merino sold to 35?,d. per lb., a record so far for tho season. AUSTRALIAN WHEAT PRODUCTION INCREASING. Winnipeg, November 24. Mr George IV. Robertson, secretary of the Saskatchewan wheat pool, interviewed on his roturn from Australia, said he was impressed by two facts. Australia was increasing her wheat production, and was definitely progressing toward the establishment of a pool. The latter would bo facilitated by the non-existence of a grain exchange. DAIRYING IN RANGITIKEI
HIGHER PROTUCTTON, LOWER Dominion Special. Marton, November 25. for October butter-fat the Rata and Rangitikei Dairy Companies paid out at the rate of Is. Id. per lb., while the Cheltenham paid out Is. These prices are the lowest for many .rears, last rear’s price for the two former concerns being Is. 7d. and Cheltenham’s Is. 6d. During the month the Rata Dairy Company manufactured 81 tons of butter. compared with 72 tons for October, 1925. The month’s pay-out totalled t:S(B7 Ifis. Bd.. whereas hits year it aggregated £19.833 12s. Bd. The Cheltenham Company manufactured 197 ions, which was 101 tons more than hist season’s output f or the month, and besides the larger quantity the butter is grading higher than was (ho case in October. 1925. The last gradinl’’ note stated that Cheltenham butter was grading 94.54, which is lemarkably good. Eor November butter-fat most of tho companies in this district will bo paying out at the rate of Is. per lb. The Rata Herd Testing Association is this year testing 24 herds, comprising 1904 cows. For the month of October the association average per cow was 9481 b. of milk, 3.7 test, 35.771 b. of butter-fat. Tho highest producing cows under test yielded: 13801 b. of milk, 7.8 test, 107.911 b. of butter-fat: and the lowest producing cow 120, 3.2, 3.84. DAIRY INDUSTRY REGULATIONS GAZETTED. New regulations under the Dairy Industry Act as to tho manufacture and export of dairy produce were gazetted last night. The effect of the regulations was explained in a Ministerial statement published in Wednesday’s Dominion. , , , r The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., have receive! the following advice from London (last quotations in parentheses):—Blitter: New Zealand. more demand. 1425. to 1445. per cwt fl3Ss. to 1425.).: controlled, 1525. to 1665. per owt. There was a lair demand for Government slocks and bomts, with buyers of the 4-.1 per cents, at £96 12s. 6d„ 5 per cents, at £9B. and 51 per cents, at £lOO 12s. (id. Wellington Racing Club debentures were firm at £lO6. Bank shares were slow. There were buyers of Bank of New South Wales at JDS cum dividend, Bank of New Zealand rights at 6s. 6d., and Union Bank ar £l5 4s. New Zealand Guarantee Corporation preference shares were steady at 20s. Gil. Loan and Mercantile ordinary stocks were in demand at £95, and Wellington Investment at 10s. 6d.
