SANDERS CUP
ALL BLACK WINS SECOND TRIAL.
The second Sanders Cup trial was held last evening, the yachts being well tested by the choppy sea. 'three fourteen footers faced the starter but All Black was the only one to finish the course. Pegg}’ got a bad start and endeavoured to sail with too much canvas, while Wellesley lost a gaff when on the return home. The start was unfortunate. When the flags went up Peggy had just left the boat harbour and when the flag was lowered she was about 20 yards from the starting line, while Wellesley and All Black were on the line and some distance to windward. Skipper Sterling turned his boat and started on the course, but was recalled by tho starter, thus losing 50 to 00 yards. There was a. good beat up to Jerningham buoy, which was rounded by Wellesley 35 seconds ahead of All Black, and Peggy a further one minute 25 seconds awav. Peggy had too much sail and could not carry it. _ Wellesley increased the lead for a while in the boat to the Coromandel buoy, but rounded it oulv 30 seconds ahead, while Peggy was f> minutes and 10 seconds behind the lending boat. The two leading boats raced well in the run home, neither attempting to drag out any light sails. About half-way to Jerningham buoy M ellosley iibbel. owing to a defect in the '’tiff. Eventually the gaff broke and the crew lowered tho sail and gave up the race, while Peggy did not finish the course being too far behind. The boats started at 5.55 p.m. nnd All Blacks finishing time was 6.45.
