A WELL-KNOWN BREEDER

MR. R. I). D. McLEAN

VIEWS ON ROYAL SHOW LOCATION

Many prominent breeders of the Dominion are of the opinion that the Royal Show should be centrally situated, and the locations which have been discussed as the most suitable and advantageous are Palmerston North, in the North Island, and Christchurch in the South Island.

A leading st<*:k breeder who subscribes to this view, is Mr. R. D. D. McLean, of Hawke’s Bay, one of the foremost exhibitors in the country, whose convictions are based on a very wide experience. Mr. McLean is the son of the late Sir Donald McLean, K.C.M.G., who took a very active part in the pioneer days of New Zealand. Resident at Maraekakabo, Hawke’s Bav Mr. Mc-

Lean is well-known for his public activities, being formerly a member of Parliament, and having served on many local bodies, to which he devoted untiring energy. A barrister-at-law, although" never having practised bis profession, lie is also chairman of the New Zealand branch of the Navy League, in connection with which organisation bis activities are wellknown.

But it is in stock circles that Mr. McLean has reached his greatest eminence, and he is recognised as one of the largest breeders in New Zealand of pure-bred cattle, sheep, and horses. He has imported many noted sires and dams from England, and for many vears past has spared neither time nor expense in securing the finest animals obtainable.

A most successful exhibitor, having secured numerous championships, both in the north and south islands, including champion awards at the Royal Show, both in Palmerston North and Christchurch, Mr. McLean has nor hesitated in expressing as his personal opinion that there are only two places which can lay any sound claim to the Roval Show, and they are Palmerston North and Christchurch. The alternate use of these two centres, lie considers, offers the greatest facility in the exhibition of the best stock from the widest range which the Dominion has to offer, and would assist most in the achievement of that at which the Royal Society aims.
