I’- Herbert at the meeting of the board today. “Some will not work and you can’t make them work. One man I have come across would rather let his wife and children starve than do the work lie is able to.”
These remarks followed on the report of the board’s Benevolent Committee, which stated. “With reference to the request” of the deputation which waited upon the board regarding • the amount of work to be done in return for benevolent relief; the committee recommends that all able-bodied men receiving relief from the board be required to perform work of the value equivalent to the assistance given.” The report was adopted.
