Mr. Bernard Tripp, of Canterbury, who has just returned from Europe, mentioned mat before the war Germany was oue of ihe best customers for New Zealand crossbred wool. Now that her economic position was improving. Germany was again coming into the market. GOOD COMPETITION AT LONDON SALES
DECLINE IN VALUES
(Rec. November 21, 5.5 p.m.) London, November 23.
At the wool sales there was a largo attendance from all quarters. There wore 9362 bales offered. It was an average selection and there was excellent competition, practically all being sold. Germany and the Home Irada were the chief operators. Compared witl) October closing rates. Merinos were 5 to 7J per cent. lower, and crossbreds from par to 5 per cent, lower. OTHER ADVICES The Bank of New Zealand, produce department, has received the following advice from its London oflice under date November 23:—“The sales have open ed with moderate competition and large attendance of buyers. Oompaied with the close of Inst series, all qualities of merinos and crossbreds are id. to Id per lb. lower." Messrs. Dalgety and Co. Ltd., report having received the following cablegram from their London house under date November 23:—"Wool sales opined good competition, large attendance of buyers. average selection. As compared with closing rates of Inst series, greasy merino Id lower; scour?-] merino, Hd to 2d. lower; greasy fine crossbred, unchanged; greasy medium end coarse crossbred, par to id. lower; scoured crossbred par to id. lower: slipe. |d to Id. tower." Messrs Levin and Co., Ltd., have received the following cablegram from their London agents, dated November 23: -“The nnctions opened here to-day with a large attendance of Horne and Continental buyers. The Wafrarapa Farmers’ Co-operative Association. Ltd., are in receipt of the following cablegram from their London agents under date November 23:—“The sixth series of wool sales opened to-day. There was a large attendance of buyers. Fine crossbred shows no quotable change. Medium cross par to 5 per cent, decline: coarse crossbred, par to 5 per cent, decline. compared with closing rates of previous sales.” Messrs. Murray, Roberts, and Co., Ltd., are in, receipt- of the following wool market cablegram from their London agents, dated November 23:- "Sales have opened with a good tone; large attendance ot buyers, competition good. Continental buyers principal operators. Good selection of merino. Greasy merino and best scoured merino, par to 5 per cent, decline; scoured merino, other descriptions, declined 5 per cent. Poor selection crossbred greasy offered Crossbred greasy medium and coarse, par to 5 per cent. ' decline; crossbred scoured, market shows no material change; crossbred slipe, declined 6 to 7J per cent." The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., have leceived the following cablegram from i heir London house, under date November 33:—“There was a good attendance at the opening of the sales to-day, competition by Home and German buyers being active, and prices, -as compared with ‘he close of the preceding series, ruled par to 5 per cent, lower for good and medium merino, and greasy crossbred: 5 per cent, to 7/ per cent. lower for inferior merino and clothing wool; and 5 per cent, lower for crossbred slipe The opening catalogues were representative.”

THE BUTTER PROBLEM "New Zealand, with a population of LMOOO, consumes 15,0T0 tons of butter each .year, equal to one-fourth of our annul I export,” remarked the president (Mr. A. IL Mackrell) at the annual conference of the Chambers of Commerce yesterday. "If we doubled our population. we would consume 30.000 tons of butler per year, equal to half of our present annual export, and so the problem of finding markets for butter and all other produce of the land to which this compari-on applies, would be lessened.”
