IMPERIAL CONFERENCE RESULTS
REFERENCE BY HON. A. D. McLEOD
IMPORTANCE OF GERMANY IN WORLD'S TRADE
Referring to the Imperial. Conference when addressing the assembly of Associated Chambers of Commerce yesterday, the Minister of Industries and
Commerce ;Hon. A. D. McLeod) said that the Imperial gathering bad materially altered, or was going to alter, New Zealand’s position with the head of the Empire. It had set out a different status for the King himself and
his representatives, which apparently met with the approval of all the Dominions. ‘lt is, we believe and sincerely hope, one further step in cementing the feeling we have for one another in the various portions of the Empire,” he said.
“Quite recently there has been another verv important happening, which must reflect itself particularly along the lilies of commerce and trade. I refer to the Geneva Conterence, and the free admission as an equal of that great Power, Germany, which we, for three or four years, did our best to put under. War and the results of war do not pass away so quickly, but the feelings of war have the happy knack of dissolving, and we as Britishers are able to shake hands with our enemies. The admission of such a great country, carrying such a large population, and having such great recuperative powers, must have a big effect on trade, not only in New Zealand, but throughout the world.”
