YESTERDAY’S BUSINESS AND PRICES

At the afternoon call yesterday sales were reported 01 4i per cent, stocks (1938) at £96 155., Union Bank shares at £l5 ss. fid. and £l5 55., and Wilson’s Cement at 355. There was a good demand for Government slocks und bonds, with buyers of the 41 per cents, at £96 12s. fid., and the 5 per cents, at £lOO 10s. tor the stocks and £lOO 15s. tor the bonds. Wellington Racing Club debentures were firm at £lO6. Bank shares were steady, with bids of 32s for Commercial Bank, £44 -15 s. cum dividend for Bank of New South Wales, 60s. 3d. for Bank of New Zealand, and 6s. 6d. for Bank, of New Zealand rights. Sellers quoted £l4 ss. for Bank of Australasia shares and £l5 6s. for Union Bank shares. There were buyers of Wellington Trust and Loan at £6 10s., New Zealand Guarantee oidinary at 10s. 4d., preference at 20s. (id., and Wellington Investment at 10s. (id. Gas shares were steady. There were bids of 235. 3d. for Auckland Gas, 235. 6d. for Christchurch Gas, and 265. 3d. for XVellington Gas. Gear Meat shares were in demand at 365. 6d„ and New Zealand Refrigerating shares, 10s. paid, at 6s. 9d. There were buyers of Huddart-Parker preference shares at 20s. '3d., Union Steam preference at 20s. 3d., P. and O. deferred stock at £240, and Kelburne Tram at 275. Brewery shares were steady, with buyers of Crown Brewery at 19s. 9d., New Zealand Breweries at 51s. 3d., Staples and Co. st 375., and Ward and Co. at 425. 6d. C. M.
