BORER IN WOOD
SEARCH FOR PREVENTIVES BY SAWMILLERS’ FEDERATION.
The New Zealand Sawmillers’ Federation is at present considering the question of borer in timbers and carrying out some research work to find the best means of combating the menace. It is gathering all possible information respecting the parasites which attack the larvae of the boring insect, and is also investigating several new processes of impregnation of wood with preservative chemicals. Experiments being carried out —though not yet sufficiently advanced to form definite conclusions—seem to indicate that under certain conditions the borer parasites multiply in great numbers, and it is possible that a means may be discovered to stimulate artificially the propagation of these minute insects so that they will ultimately secure complete ascendancy over the borer, and so check the depredations of this timber pest. ■
