WANTED—AN EXPLANATION
Sir,—Surelv the Prisons Board can give' a satisfactory answer to the questions asked by Mr. Howard Elliott. If the evidence submitted to them was sufficient to release Baume after serving so short a term, then surely they can give a straight-out answer to a straightforward question. The cost of an inquiry would be saved if a satisfactory answer would be given. .It seems to me that there is something that the Prisons Board do not care to disclose, or else they would not try to dodge the most important question of all, “Why was Baume released?” It does not seem at all logical for a judge to sentence a man to three years’ imprisonment and then to have that term reduced to seven months. This Cfse is creating widespread interest, and the Government will need to come to light with a clear explanation if they wish to retain the confidence of the citizens of New Zealand.—l am, etc., CITIZEN.
