THE RACING WORLD

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “The Watcher.”)

The annual race meeting of the Ash-hurst-L’uhaugiua Racing Club will be Held tu-uiorruw at Ashliurst. Sun 11 v Loch, who showed a glimpse of form at Riccarton, is now being schooled over hurdles Gold Box had a return of his old. trouble at Levin, and was unable to start. It will be hard luck for Ins connections if it keeps him off the scene for the approaching meetings, as he is in prime condition at present. I’rogenv of Acre were very prominent at Levin on Saturday, winning three .races and filling third place in another. Tcnipean took a lot out of himself by jumping extravagantly in the hurdle race at Levin on Saturday, but with experience lie looks like making good. Gauntlet put in a couple of poor jumps on Saturday which cost him some ground, but he won well, and lie lias only got to improve to hold Ins own in better company. ~, , . • Sir Tam made a bad blunder earlv m the race for the hurdlers on Saturdav, but he came fast from a long way back in the concluding stages, and may be useful at the game. . General Wai is racing very consistently, but be seems just good enough to get beaten. Perseverance may soon bring its reward. The maidens that Kilniezzo beat on Saturdav were far from being a .good lot, but his subsequent effort was creditable, and lie should hold his own m immediate engagements. Awapuni track watchers were prepared for the good showing of Lin Arlington on Saturday. He won easily, nnd is verv well at present, so that ne should show up again .before long. Beaumont ran a good race on Saturdav, and over a shorter course prescntl'v he should be troublesome. Hipo may be going down hill, but well placed there appears to be a stake or two in him yet. Saturday’s race looked as if it would improve him. Bonhomme ran a very good race in the Levin Cup, all things considered. He was verv fractious at the. start as usual, and lost a considerable amount ofiground. He made it up in an amazing run which, had it come a little later, might have seen him very troublesome at the finish. In addition, he carried 41b, over-weight. Bonhomnie s manners at the post will always make him a risky proposition for backers, but he is a great galloper when he gets going. Nah Tong made his reappearance in the Levin Cup He was very fresh at the barrier, and in the contest was never prominent. Penman was tried over ten furlongs on Saturday, and he ran a good race without receiving anv of the luck. He should run well again shortly, but light boys, particularly the stamp of those at present doing the 7.0 riding, are not likely to suit him. No Favours showed good form on Saturday, and on a track not so subject to turning he should be well forward again. Star Area is looking m good order at present. On Saturday, with 9.8 up, he stood on the mark when the barrier lifted, and lost some lengths on the leaders Even then he might have won had he got a good run in the later stages, but no opening presented itself. R. J. Mackie was absent, from Levin on Saturday owing to an attack of the measles. It looked as if First Acre’s task on Saturday was somewhat easier than it might have been. The unconsidered Star Shell nearly stole a march on them. . . , Te Monanui is training on satisfactorily at New Plymouth, and he should play his part well in big events at Ellerslie next month. Mr. Janies McCormack, owner of Tarleton, has completed the purchase of Nincompoop and Precious from Mr. G. D. Greenwood, and both have entered the stable controlled by J. Boyd, at Riccarton. Mr. McCormack has only joined the ranks of owners since be acquired Tarleton Kingfield, the winner of the sprint event at Ellerslie on the opening day, as a foal lost his dam and had to be brought up by hand. His owner, Mr. Harris, is stated to have tried to give him away, but the man to whom he made the offer would not accept him. Mr. Harris then decided to race him, and he has performed fairly prominently for him. A Palmerston North sportsman later made an endeavour to secure him, without success, while a more recent offer of £lOOO was made for the King Lupin gelding, with, a view to sending him to’ Australia, but this was likewise refused. Apache finished well in third place each day at Winton, and the Solferino gelding promises to extend his winning record before the coming holiday meetings are over. Following on the New Zealand Cup meeting Mr. W Stone, on his return to Invercargill, .was hastily summoned to Pembroke to see his valuable youngster. Silver Paper, who • had become the victim •of a wire-fence accident. The son of Silver Peak was found to have sustained severe injuries, but it is hoped that they will leave no serious effects, . although unsightly scars may remain. The next bad news for the Invercargill owner was the information that a three-year-old, who recently kicked him, had also met with a mishap necessitating his destruction

The Wanganui studmaster Mr G. M. Currie lias a couple of foals at his stud this season in whom a lot of interest will centre. One of them is a brother to Lysander, by Absurd from Pennon, while the other is a half-bro-ther to Commendation, bv Thespian (son of Absurd) from Eulogy. Agrion and Eulalie are being kept in steady work, and they may both be sent to Auckland at Christmas. The Australian-bred two-year-old Philippic, by Demosthenes from Ednaver, has rejoined R. J. Mason’s team, after a spell. He is a well-grown colt, who gives promise of making a good three-year-old. W. Pyne intends taking Killoch, Partaga, and Sunshot to Ashhurst for the meeting next Wednesday. Killoch is to contest the hurdle race, and F. Corlett is to have the mount. Provided Battlement continues to do well during the next few weeks, he will be taken north bv F. D. Jones for the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting, and will be a competitor in the Great Northern Derb« on New Year’s Dav. Whether he is qualified to take on Commendation at even weights is a point that requires demonstration. His Australian running, however, left no doubt as to Ins stamina, as he won over a mile and three-quarters at Randwick in record time. He carried only a light weight on that occasion, but it will cause no surprise if be proves himself, latef in the season, a high-class three-year-old over long journeys. Advices to hand from Sydney state that the leg injury which led to Windbag’s withdrawal from all spring engagements is yielding satisfactorily to treatment, but it is for time to reveal whether the son of Magpie can again be successfully trained Amongst the foals running on Mr. T. H. Lowrv’s property is a colt by Psychology from Desert Gold. Desert Gold had previously been mated with the English-bred sire, the result being a filly, now a rising two-year-old, who

is being handled. She is a fine, raking juvenile, a chestnut m colour, in which respect she takes after her grand-dam, Aurarius, who was of that Andv jumped faultlessly at Winton, and looked a winner a long way from home (says a southern writer) He will be in better-class fields before long.
