SANDERS CUP

PEGGY WINS FIRST TRIAL. Preparations are now well in hand in Wellington for the Sanders Cup contest, which will be taking place in Lyttelton early in February. The first of the trial races to choose the yacht which is to represent Wellington, and the crew which is to sail her, took place last evening. Three yachts competed, namely Peggy. Wellesley, and All Black. The course, a triangular one, was from between the Clyde Quay and Taranaki Street wharves, to the buoy at Point Jerningham. from there to the Coromandel buoy, and from thence back to the starting point again. Mr. G. G. Groves was the official starter and judge. Weather conditions were not favourable yesterday, the wind, which was a moderate north-north-westerly, being very patchy. When the signa! to start was given at 6.1 p.m., Peggy had some thirty yards start on the ether boats. All three got under way for the run to Poiut Jerningham almost immediately. ’<‘gev kept her lead, and was the first to clear the buoy, with Wellesley thirty seconds behind, and All Black forty seconds further away in last place. As the Coromandel buoy was i.pproached. the wind suddenly dropped almost entirely, and then became very patchy. Eventually, after an unsuccessful attempt, Peggy cleared, followed three minutes and ten seconds later by Wellesley, which was followed in ten seconds by All Blank. Before this buoy was rounded by Wellesley and All Black, the three boais were nearly becalmed. On the run home. All Black was the first to let out her spinnaker, and was followed by Wellesley and Peggy in that order. Peggy, however. had to take it in again for some minutes At first Wellesley dropped well behind All Black, but caught and passed her again near the finishing tine, which Peggy cleared at 6.49.40. followed twenty seconds later by Wellesley, which beat All Black by two seconds. Peggy was skippered by A. Sterling. All Black by A. G. Orawfoi-d, and Wellesley by P. White.
