WELLINGTON STOREMEN’S UNION
A mass meeting of the storemen employed in the Hutt Read oil stores was held yesterday, and the matter ot the delay in not making an award covering the industry in Wellington district was fully discussed. The question of wages and shift work were the only points submitted to the Court for decision. It was pointed out that the case was heard on September 16,. 1926, aud up to November 22, a period of nine weeks and five days, no award had been made by the Court. It was stated that great dissatisfaction existed among the men, because they claimed that the case having been put, and evidence laid before the Court, they were entitled to an award in justice and equity, upon the evidence submitted. The following resolution was passed: “That this meeting of oil storemen strongly protests against the action of the Arbitration Court in unreasonably delaying the making of an award, in the Wellington oil storemen’s dispute, in the matter of wages, as referred to the Court from the Conciliation Council and heard bv the Court on September 16, 192(1. We also further urge that the matter be brought under the notice of the Minister of Labour for investigation. It is the unanimous opinion of this meeting that there can be no justifiable reason for such a lengthy delay in making an award. We, therefore, claim that the award when made should be retrospective from the date of hearing the case, viz., Septerber 16. 1926.”
