“It would be a good thing if it became known that an acclimatisation ranger has wide powers indeed," stated Mr. E. A. Williams at a meeting of the executive of the Hawke’s Bay Acclimatisation Society in Napier (reports an exchange), when it was stated that a ranger could search a person on suspicion of poaching or illegal practice, and had the same powers in administering the game laws as a constable. A rather extraordinary position arose in connection with the Waipa County Council work recently (states an exchange). The council called for tenders for three different pieces of road work. Three tenders were received —all at the .•nine price. It was decided to cast lots to decide who should get the work, as all three were reputable contractors. This was done, and, strange to say, one i of the' t enderer’s was successful in ee- | curing all three contracts.
