LEVIN MEETING DIOGENES WINS THE CUP FIRST ACRES M C DONALD MEMORIAL
(By
“The Watcher.”)
In contrast to the dull, prevailing weather in Wellington on Saturday the Levin Racing Club was favoured with bright, warm sunshine and perfect conditions for its annual race meeting on the Levin course. There was an excellent attendance, both of local folk and visitors. The Wellington special train was so well patronised that additional carriages were requisitioned. The Government was particularly well reprsented, three Ministers of the Crown (the Hons. K. S. Williams, R. F. Bollard and W. Nosworthy) and the Speaker of the House (Sir Charles Statham) being present. The Hon. K. S. Williams arrived in time to see his own horse Gauntlet win the hurdle race.
me racing was good, one or two of the finishes being extraordinarily close, while the concluding event saw a dead heat for first place. The principal race, the Levin Cup, was won by Nr. H. I’. F. Blundell’s colt Diogenes in comfortable fashion from Hipo and Kilfaire. It was a race marked by very rough and incompetent riding on the part of the apprentices engaged. Interference was such as to be positively dangerous on more than one occasion. The winner was fortunate enough to occupy a good position throughout and to be in the hands of a competent horseman, who steered clear of trouble on the journey. Hardly one of the other runners escaped interference. It is not suggested that it made any difference to the result, but as both Hipo and Kilfaire were sent to the rear very early the finish might have been much more interesting. After the race the handsome silver trophy accompanying the stake was presented to Mr. Blundell by the Hon. R. F. Bollard, the ceremony being performed in the birdcage.' The McDonald Memorial Handicap resulted in a very close finish, First Acre gaining the verdict by a narrow margin from Star Shell, who had made the pace clear of his field all the way. Joy Bird, Star Area and Epistle were all close up, and Star Area with a good run might have won There was a decrease of £lOO-5 on the totalisator figures for the day as compared with last year’s meeting, the respective totals being £18,573 and £19,578. MANAWATU HURDLES. Matu was a slightly better favourite than Gauntlet for the hurrdles, Axle being the best backed of the others. Tempean, jumping big, and Empire Camp made all the early running from Gauntlet and Matu. Over the concluding stages the leaders tired, and there weie only two in it, Matu and Gauntlet. They were together at the last fence, where Matu made a bad jump, and Gauntlet won by a neck. Tempean was a poor third, just in front of Empire Camp and Sir Pam. The latter was nearly down at the second fence, but made up an astounding amount of ground in the final stages. The winner, put in a couple of bad jumps on the journey. WERAROA HANDICAP. Petal and Our Jack were firm favourites for the Weraroa Handicap, ■with good support for Gardant, Ardfinnan, General Wai, and Panart. Sole Mio led the bunch down the back, her nearest attendants being Our Jack, Anchor, and Gardant. Running for the straight Petal moved up, with Gardant, and the latter led for home. Once in line, however, Anchor challenged, and won by half a length from Panart, who beat General Wai by a length. Asleep was fourth, and then came Gardant, Sole Mio, Our Jack, and Petal. The winner paid a big price. ■ MAIDEN RAGE. Kilmezzo was a warm favourite for the Maiden Race. He led practically all the way and won comfortably from Dominion Rose and Molto, both of whom finished over the early leaders, Palette, Humoresque, and Dale Ogden. Theodolite was a poor fourth, followed by Humoresque and Dale Ogden. The class of the runners was very moderate. MAKO MAKO HANDICAP. Black Mint was a solid favourite for the Mako Mako Handicap. He did not begin well, and in addition was nearly down at the four-furlong post. Lin Arlington led all the way, and won comfortably from Vivo, with Twink a fair third, and then Take Take and the favourite. Lin Arlington won very easily, and is at present very well. LEVIN CUP. Hipo (R. Reed) was established favourite for the Levin Cup from Diogenes, Kilfaire, and Indian Sage, with support for Roues. It was a very rough race, several horses meeting with severe interference at various stages. Rouex was nearly down at the four furlongs, and Benmure on the turn was knocked to his knees. Indian Sage, Misgovern, and Kilfaire were also in trouble. The majority of the lightweight jockeys rode like a lot of butcher boys. Diogenes steered clear of all trouble, being near the leaders all the way, and he scored an easy win, Hipo was one of the first out, and in the first furlong all the favourites occupied good positions, but on the light-weights rushing to the front the trouble commenced. Hipo and Kilfaire were soon well back, with only Bonhomme, who had got away last, behind them. Benmure and Misgovern were the leaders from Diogenes, Nukumai, Indian Sage, and Rouex past the post the first time, but Indian Sage and Rouex soon got knocked, and down the bark Rouex nearly fell, the order being Misgovern and Benmure from Diogenes, Nukumai, Beaumont, and Stream Beaumont was second running for the home turn, and was in front with Bonhomme second, on the turn the latter having put in an amazing run up. This was where Benmure got his bump, and it was miracu-
lous he stood up. After the mix-up Morris shot Diogenes away, and he led into the straight from Nukumai, Bouhomme, and Beaumont. Over the concluding stages Hipo threaded his way through the ruck, and Kilfaire came on the outer, but neither could get close enough to challenge Diogenes. It was remarkable that Hipo was able to get where he did considering the passage he got. Nukumai, Bonhomme, Penman, and Beaumont, who were next, all ran good races. They were followed by Rouex, whose luck was out all the way. LAKE HANDICAP. No Favours was favourite for the Lake Handicap from Panart and Asleep. Conviction led in the early stages from Panart and Inoe, Mountain Star sad Asleep closed up entering the straight and a wonderful finish saw Asleep, No Favours, Panart, Mountain Star, Inoe and Conviction go over the line with no more than heads between them. No Favours was a bit unlucky. McDonald memorial. Epistle and Modern were the favourites for the McDonald Memorial. Handicap. Star Shell led from Joy Bird and First Acre, followed by Santonio and'Modern, with Epistle heading the bunch. They closed on the leader entering the straight and in a great finish First Acre beat Star Shell by a head, with Joy Bird half a length off. Right up were Santonio, Star Area, and Epistle. The latter did not occupy a good early position. HOKIO HANDICAP. Jazz Baby was a solid favourite for the concluding event. Kilmezzo and Roval Game being very evenly backed with some £3OO less. -Kilmezzo was penalised 101 b. for his maiden win, but it was reduced 51b. with the apprentice allowance. He played up at the post and lost three or four lengths I'Ke Bolter showing the way from' Jazz Baby Starbird, Roval Land and Royal Game. Jazz Babv'took charge rounding the bend from The Bolter, Royal Land, Starboard Light and Kilmezzo. The leaders: were in close order at the entrance to the straight, with Kilmezzo coming up well. Jazz Baby and Knmezzo got to the judge (wo lengths ahead of Royal Land, with Royal Game, The Bolter, and Starboard Light next.
