BRITISH MINERS
REJECT SETTLEMENT PROPOSALS
DELEGATE CONFERENCE TO DECIDE FUTURE POLICY
LOCAL NEGOTIATIONS SUGGESTED The British miners by their vote have rejected the proposals for settlement ol the strike, and the future policy rests with the delegates' conference. London, November 18. It is estimated that the unexpected swing ol the miners’ vote was the result of at least 190,000 being against the proposals. Mr. A. J. Cook, secretary of the Miners’ Federation, declared that the future policy of the miners rested entirely with the delegates at the conference on Friday. He added that the only thing certain is that the miners had overwhelmingly rejected the proposals. Miners’ delegates, who have returned from the coalfields, state that they have discussed the situation, though there is an unofficial statement that it is known no recommendation will be made at to-morrow’s conference, which will therefore be free to pursue its own course. (Rec. November 19, 7.50 / p.m.) London, November 19. The “Daily Herald” says the miners’ delegate conference will no doubt direct that the Government be informed of the result of the voting, and the conference will have to decide whether any further approach shall be made to the Government or national negotiations abandoned. One of -the alternatives being considered is that the districts proceed with local negotiations and report the results to a further national conference. In any case the vote of the rank and file is regarded as a decision to fight on for honourable terms. The policy will be determined in that light.
