KERMADEC ISLANDS
ATTEMPT AT RESETTLEMENT
Dominion Special.
Auckland, November 19. On her recent trip Io Niue Island the Government steamer Hiueinoa, which returned to Auckland yesterday afternoon, litnded Mr. C. H. Parke and two companions at Sunday Island in the Kerma(lees. The Ifinemoa left Auckland on November 2. and arrived off the island two days later, anchoring in Denham Bay. Stores and a small riuantity of corrugated iron were landed in the ship's boats and after a stay of four hours the Hinemoa resumed her voyage. Mr. Parker, who is the owner of the only portion of the island that has been Crown granted, is to take up agriculture on the northern side of the island. Huts are to be built on his property. The landing of Mr. Packer’s party marks an effort nt settlement after an interval of thirty-six vears. Mr. T. Bell and family landed on the island in 1878, while the Inst attempt at settlement was made in 1889. Since that date the absence of means of communication has prevented settlement. Now, however, the Ifinemoa passes within a mile of the island on her trips to Nine and in future she will call there if signalled to do so.
