- The bitumen surfacing on the Grey-town-Waiohiue road is now just about finished, and a start has been made on the final preparation of the surface for sealing in the Featherston-Martinbor-ough road.

An examination for certificates of competency for road overseei s and foremen is being held by the Main Highways Board in January.

The Wairarapa counties are making arrangements for bringing their proposed joint by-laws into effect on April 1 next.

The Pongaroa-Eketahuna road is reported as in fair order generally, and also the Pongaroa-Pahiatua road with the exception of the upper part, where repair metal is needed.

Hawke’s Bay County is proceeding with bitumen sealing on the West Shore road between Napier and Petane as soon as authority is received from the Main Highways Board.

A proposal has been made by- the Masterton Chamber of Commerce that the Main Highways Board should take over the Masterton-Taueru road with a view to making a deviation at the Devil’s Elbow.

The I’arapara road from Wanganui to Raetihi, now the principal way into the Totigariro National Park from the south, is to receive increased maintenance attention from the Wanganui County Council. A proposal by the conntv engineer to put on more roadmen “for maintenance work and to erect three cottages for them has been approved.

In putting down its tarred roads Patea Countv decided that length was preferable to width fo ra beginning, and nut down a considerable mileage with a 12-foot tarred surface. The . CountyCouncil has now decided to widen the tarred portions at certain places that are dangerous and difficult with the increased volume of motor traffic.

Waipawa Countv councillors are becoming rather alarmed at the cost of laying down bitumen surfaces, and have decided to complete the work tn hand between Waipawa and Waipukurau, and then consider the position. A motion that the cost of main highways work should be a charge only on the ridings in which the highways are situated was lost on the chairman’s casting vote.

Sumner is tired of having the Christchurch trams and buses racing each other through its borough area. A councillor the other day observed a tram and a bus approaching from the Redcliffs township in the midst of a cloud of dust. He took out. his watch as the tram passed and timed it to the loop at Shag Rock corner, a distance of 40 chains. The exact time was 55 seconds, making the speed of the tram 33 miles an hour. The tram was swaying from side to side.
