HOROWHENUA NEW ROADS

COST WELL WITHIN ESTIMATE. Consequent on criticisms of the bitumen road work in Horowhenua County by Councillor Catley and others, the county council recently got three engineers to look at the road and give their verdict. The engineers were Mr. A. Tyndall (Highways Board engineer), Mr. Ronayne (district engineer, Public Works Department), and Mr. Littlejohn (resident engineer. Public Works Department). The result is a very flattering certificate for the county engineer, Mr. Anderson. In a letter to the county council Mr. Ronayne stated: “This length of highway under consideration, which extends over a length of 71 miles, was very thoroughly examined from end to end, and the work completed to date can be classified as first-class. The fact that seven miles of this penetration work has stood up to the winter traffic in many cases on a wet foundation, and without a sealing coat, speaks for itself, and proves that the job has been done in a workmanlike manner by those concerned. The only fault that can be found with the work is that the county engineer attempted to do too much penetration work, and did not follow up closely enough with his sealing work.” Mr. Anderson’s original estimate for this section was £16,680. With alterations, as approved by the Main Highways Board, the final estimate was £16,480. The expenditure to October 9 was £15,747, with £7OO required to complete the job, making the total cost £16,447 The average cost per mile has been £2082 6s. Id., or £26 os. 7d. per chain. The materia! included 1539 barrels of bitumen, at £1 14s. 54d. per barrel; 15,187} cubic yards of metal at 7s. ll|d. (cost on the road) ; and 2556} cubic yards of chips at 4s. 91d.
