activities during the MONTH MORE IMPORTANT LOCAL WORKS The following are the more important local works carried out during the month of October by the Main Highways Board: — . Woodville-Palmerston North: Bridge at 32 chains. The construction of tins bridge is being continued. Napier-Wellington via Wairarapa: Kaikora stream bridge. A commencement has been made with the construction of this bridge. Whakaruatapu Deviation: Goon progress is being made with this w< • ■ It is expected that the Piri Piri m will be available for traffic in abo. I six weeks’ time. Matahiwi Hill Deviation: Good progress is being made with this work, 27 chains of formation having been completed to date; 36 lineal feet of culverts have been placed. Gisborne-Wairoa, via Hangaroa: Rings bridge deviation—This work is in hand. Auckland-Wellington, via Taranaki: Mokau River bridge—Good progress is being made with this work. Inglewood County Section: Work has been commenced on the surfacing of the Rugbv-Tariki length. Patea' County Section: A commencement has been made with the reconstruction of a section of this highway between 4 miles 53 chains and 5 miles 45 chains north of Patea. New Plvmouth-Kaimata, via Inglewood: Maketawa bridge—This reinforced concrete bridge is in hand. Eltham-Ounake: 92 chains of this highwav has been metalled and waterbound between Opunake and Mangahume. Mangahume stream bridge— This work is in hand. Ohura Road: Whangamomona saddle —7B chains of this section has been regraded and widened. Wanganui-Horopito: 18 chains of widening was completed during the month. Wellington-Auckland, via Taranaki: Ngahauranga Gorge section—The block cutting at I mile 12 chains has been completed and the improvement to the curve at 1 mile 35 chains has also been completed. Several large culverts are in hand.

Johnsonville-Tawa Flat Section.... Twelve chains of widening has been completed during the month, and 19 chains is in progress of widening; 16 chains of the new formation has been metalled and rolled; 135 lineal feet of concrete pipes has been placed. Pareniata-Horokiwi Valley.—The total length of widening and metalling completed on this length is 4 miles 30 chains. Widening is in progress over a further 64 chains, and metalling is in progress over a length of 32 chains. The sea wall on this section has been completed. Paekakariki-Waikanae. —The total length of widening and metalling completed on this section amounts to 1 mile 8 chains Widening is in progress over a further 88 chains, and a length of 64 chains, has been partly metalled. Waikanae-Manakau. —The preparation of the foundations is in hand on this work, preparatory to the construction of bituminous macadam surfacing. Levin-Palmerston North, via Shan-non.—Levin-Tokomarn: Between Levin and Waoku Stream, 4 miles of construction work is in progress. The shoulders and foundation are being prepared for bituminous penetration work.

Wellington-Napier, via Wairarapa.— Mungaroa Hill-Rimutaka Hill: X mile 8 chains of this section has been widened, and 90 chains has been rolled. Greytown-Waiohine Bridge.—Thirty chains of bituminous penetration work was completed. Carterton ' Borough Boundary to Waingawa Bridge.—l3o chains of this section has been reformed, metalled, and graded in preparation for sealing work.

Waingawa Bridge to Masterton Borough Boundary.—Six chains of this length has been widened in preparation for sealing work. Mount Bruce Road.—A small amount of widening has been carried out. Konini Bridge.—The metalling of the southern approach to this bridge is in hand.

Warren’s Bridge.—The approaches to this bridge' are still under construction.

Pahiatua Borough to Pahiatua Railway Station.—Reinforced coucrete culvert 8 inches x 6 inches, is under construction.

Masterton-Tinui.—The construction of a concrete culvert at Rorokoko is in hand.

Featherston-Martinborough.— Twelve chains of widening has been completed at Knoll’s Cutting, and 8 chains of similar work lias been completed at Bidwill’s Cutting. Nelson-Westport. — A considerable amount of damage has been done by floods on this ’ highway Doctor’s Creek Bridge was washed away. The improvement work at Dollow’s Bluff is practically completed. Inanflahua Junction-Waiho. —Little Grey Bridge at Mai Mai: The deck planking has been laid on this bridge. Wataroa Deviation.—Parker’s Creek Bridge: A commencement has been made with the construction of this bridge. Christchurch-Blenheim, via Parnassus.—Clarence River Protective Works: This work is approaching completion, ,2100 cubic yards of filling and TlO yards of stone gabion work having been placed during the month. Clarence-Dashwood Section. —Eighteen chains of widening has been completed during the month. Boundary Gully Bridge.—This bridge and its approaches have been completed. Double Ford Bridge.—This bridge and its approaches have been completed. Waipara-Kaikoura, via Culverden. — Charwel! River Bridge: All timber and iron work have been delivered on the site, and a commencement is about to be made with the construction work.
