A TALE OF WOE

CITY NEGLECT. Sir,—Many weeks ago, as the result of a motor-car collision, in which some of our councillors were implicated, a veranda post was broken in Taranaki Street. It has never been replaced and minus its support the veranda is a source of danger, but apparently the City Council officers slumber. Months ago, a veranda post in Abel Smith Street was broken. The damage has never been .repaired and the top part of it hangs from the verandah and is a constant source of danger, but apparently the City Council officials still slumber. . • Weeks ago, a veranda post in Courtenay Place, near the-King’s Theatre, was broken and at any moment the veranda might fall and possibly kill someone, but

the City Council officials only slumber the more deeply. The municipal government of Wellington has long been a bye word in New Zealand, but now it has become a joke. To walk around and note the awful condition of the city footpaths is enough to make any decent man curse. For over twelve months the footpaths in Taranaki Street would have disgraced a backblocks bush town. A visiting engineer estimated last week that 4230,000 should be spent in Wellington on footpaths alone. The city fathers motor, however, and the interests of the pedestrians are of little consequence.—l am, etc., A. .1. CAVE.
