MAKING THE HOME FIT

Wise planning and decoration of the home are, as a rule, the result of due thought and consideration of all the various factors that are involved. Among these is suitability of colour, the disposition of furniture, and the comfort thereof, labour saving devices, and so on. Colour is very important as quite apart from psychological considerations it should be apparent that, for instance, a light or delicate treatment suitable for a drawing-room would be inappropriate in an every-day living-room. Most likely such an attempt would impart an atmosphere of restraint, would tend to the feeling that the paint might be soiled. Such a feeling is deadly in the home, it implies constraint, stiffness, and an absence of freedom, an atmosphere that should be avoided at all costs. Strive to make every room essentially fit for its particular purpose, thoroughly harmonious and pleasing to young and old, a place where family life may develop, and those that come after carry with them to their last day nothing but the happiest memories and a lasting affection for that greatest of all British institutions—the home.
