STRAY NOTES
PLYWOOD PANELLING At a reasonably long view plywood panelling is one of the most economical materials for the interior finishing of dwellings that has yet been devised. It consists of layers of wood firmly cemented together in such a fashion as to ensure the greatest strength, and effectively to hold- in check any tendency on ■ the part of one of the layers to split swell, or shrink. This object is achieved by fixing the adjacent layers so that the gram of each layer is at right angles to that to which it is cemented. And herein lies the secret of the strength of plywood panelling. Owing to this method of construction a plywood panel is so tough and strong that it can, if necessary, be easily bent to cover a curved section of a wall. Plywood is obtainable faced with various decorative veneers, and if t panels of this material are finished in oil, or in some form of polished surface, the first cost is the last. Fixed to a well-constructed frame, plywood panelling is a very much better lining material than rough lining, and is stronger and more lasting than plaster. In addition to the use of plywood as a wall covering, relying for its decorative effect upon the grain of the wood, plywood of the cheaper grades can be used as a substitute for plaster, and as a basis for distemper, . paint, enamel, paper, or any other kind of finish.
