SHORT WAVE RADIO RECEPTION. Dominion Special. Palmerston North, November 1. Mr. W. A. Waters, a local wireless enthusiast, advised a Dominion reporter to-day that on Sunday afternoon he picked up 2X9 testing station on 33f metres from Schenectady, New York. At intervals of ono hour the station broadcast a list of words to be copied. At 4 p.m. (New Zealand time) the reception was fair, at 5 p.m., slightly better, and an hour later fairly good. From then on to 9 p.m. at hourly intervals the reception was poor, eveu though the distance, between stations wasin darklO p.m. reception Improved, while nn hour later, loud-speaker operation was obtained. At midnight New Zealand time and 7.30 a.m. New Aork, the volume was exceptionally good, allowin- the use of the loud-speaker. "This seenisto confirm the theory that short wave transmissions give best results when they leave the transmitting station in daylight.” remarked Mr. XVliters. Schenectady is 160 miles north of New York and 10,000 miles distance from New Zealand.
