LIVED WITH WOLVES

TWO INDIAN GIRLS FOUND IN BENGAL

RAN ON ALL FOURS AND BARKED

Bv Telegkaph.— PßESS ASSOCIATION Copybight.

Delhi, November 14

A remarkable story, absolutely vouched for by Bishop H. Pakenham-Walsb and the Rev. Singh, an Indian Christian missionary, is that of two Indian girls who were abandoned and living with wolves at Midnapore, Bengal. These girls, one aged two and the other eight, were discovered by chance owing to the villagers saying that they never used a certain path, because it was haunted there. Mr. Singh and a party came upon a wolves’ den which was guarded by the mother wolf, which had been shot. They found two cubs and two girls. The latter, which were very fierce, darted awa.v on all fours, uttering guttural barkings. . When caught, it was found that their nails had become concave through constant scratching. The children were taken to Midnapore Orphanage. One died, but the elder survived. She is normal in size and knows a few words of Bengali, and when uttering them, smiles. She has now become accustomed to clothes, but at first intenselv resented being washed. This girl still has an overpowering desire for meat, preferably raw, and has abnormallv acute senses of smell, hearing, and sight. The girl, who never barks now, lias developed, rapidly, but has no aptitude for learning.
