The child who "shows off ” before his elders has a sympathetic friend in Professor J. Shelley, of Christchurch (says an exchange). In the course of a lecture in Auckland on the evolution of the theatre, he said the tendency to play-act was natural to children, aud one of its manifestations was "showing off." Instead of being condemned for exhibiting this tendency, the child should bo encouraged. "Education.’* he san|. "should be the means of a-’sisting children to ‘show off’ instead of making fools of them. The reason -why so many children are so absurdly shy is that they want to ‘show' off, but are afraid to.”
