NEW YARRA BRIDGE

AT SPENCER STREET, MELBOURNE

“For nearly fifty years there lias been talk of a bridge over the Yarra at Spencer Street,” said Councillor Willim Cockville, of the Melbourne City Council yesterday. “But we .believe it is coming at last, forced on by the everincreasing demands of traffic from the citv to the south. There are plenty of ways out to the north, but towards the south you have to cross the Yarra. One of the troubles has always been to find the people who are to pay for it, but it has been pointed out recently by a high authority that the betterment resulting from the construction of such a bridge would be so great that it would pav for the bridge in the increase in values tb the Government property extending towards the military barracks. A bridge at Spencer Street would provide a great outlet at. a point where it is most needed. Another work mooted was to .gain additional area in Flin--ders Street by roofing in the railway tracks for a certain distance. There is one point in Melbourne near the Flinders Street railway station said to be the busiest railway spot on earth, where some twelve hundred trains a dav go under one particular bridge, and with suburban Melbourne growing rapidly that traffic must increase in the future.
