THE RACING WORLD

THE WAIKATO MEETING

NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “The Watcher.’’)

Nominations for all events at the summer meeting of the Woodville District Jockey Club will close on Friday at 9 p.ni. The Woodville telegraph office closes at 8 p.m. Acceptances for the annual meeting of tile Ashhurst-I’ohangina Racing Club will close to-night at 9 o’clock. lhe telegraph office at Ashhurst closes at 8 p.m. The Paper Money filly Note has been sold and will do her future racing on the ‘West Coast of the South Island, joining the stable occupied by Booster. Note should be a great proposition for sprint events on the small courses on the coast. F. E. Jones was in great form at Riccarton on Saturday. He had six rides for three wins and two second placings. He had also two previous successes on Footfall and Centrepiece. Fool’s Paradise is to be shipped to Melbourne by the next boat. Meantime be is remaining in charge of Captain Gage Williams. Commendation is a reformed character so far as his barrier manners are concerned. He is still a bit inclined to turn awav, but there is now none of the obstreperous behaviour of his two-vear-old davs. Seatown took on the Canterbury Cup, but on the concluding day at Riccarton he avoided the Stead Gold Cup contest for easier money. Seatown may not be in, the first flight of three-vear-olds, but he is a serviceable gelding, who appears to stand anv amount of hard work. Front Rank was unable to do better than third in the Oaks, but on Saturdav, when Pink Terrace conceded 71b. in’the handicap, she reversed positions easilv. Front Rank came from a long way back in this instance, and she may prove one of the best three-year-olds m the south. It would not be surprising to find Agrion proving better than Eulalie in future two-vear-old contests, especially when it comes to racing beyond five furlongs. Mr. George Gould has a good sort of youngster in Jericho. He cannot begin, but he finishes very solidly, and if-not overdone he should be the makings of a fine three-year-old.. It is not"the intention of his connections to do much with him, and the back end of the season may find him more than holding his own with those who can now get well away from him in the early stages of five furlong races. He is by Archery from Judith, the dam of Palestrina. Sunny Loch showed a . glimpse of form when he ran second in the opening event at Riccarton on Saturday. He was a long way back with the race half over, but finished very well. There was some support for the three-year-old gelding Sir Roy in the welter race at Riccarton on Saturday He ran well for about six furlongs, but the older horses had him well beaten at the finish. Sir Roy, however, does not appear a bad galloper, and his connections are not the sort who throw their money away. Mireusouta was backed fairly confidently on Saturday, but, after having every chance, be was not in the first eight. Another former good sprinter who appears to have slipped is Glentruin. Economist picked up a race at the Banks Peninsula meeting, and on the form he showed on Saturday he looks like winning again shortly. First Acre ran one good race at Riccarton, but afterwards ran a good deal below the form. Arpent was backed from the right quarter to win on Saturday. He was made a good deal of use of in the early stages, and was well beaten at the- distance, but it is unlikely that under the most favourable circumstances he would have won. Arpent, however, may not be long in winning another sprint event. Set Sail did remarkably good track work at Riccarton prior to the C.J.C. meeting, but she failed to run on in any of her races. She is such a solid mare that this form cannot be accepted as correct, ami if she strikes her right form shortly she will be winning races. Prior to leaving Hawera for Riccarton. Reremoana had a sort of blind boil on a cheek, and for some days he could not be bitted or worked. He had a short sprint the day he left, but his work was not of a character to suggest that' he would be capable of winning a race. Reremoana, however, showed good form in the Stead Gold Cup, and it will not be long before he ts galloping in his best style. Nincompoop has been a failure since his two-vear-old days, but on Saturday he ran a good half-mile with the leaders in the Cressy Handicap. He is now four years old, and a return to form may be imminent. Vesperus was verv unlucky on Saturday. With any sort of a run he would have been a winner. Dark Spot, a four-year-old gelding by . The Ace from Heatherbrae, ran a very creditable race on Saturday, and may be worth remembering for future reference. . Ravenna wins her share of races in the south, but on her form at Riccarton one would take the opposition down there to be verv weak when she wins. Mr. D. 11. Roberts had a good sort a few seasons back in Glendower, and he is at present racing a half-brother, Fresco. Fresco is not quite ready yet, but when he is he will keep busy some of those who finished in front of him last week. . , Precious showed a lot of speed in her engagements at Riccarton, but she lacked a finishing effort. If she forms one of R. J Mason’s holiday team she might be worth following. Mimetic started only once last week, but he ran a good race, , and the holiday meetings may find him at Ins best again. * . ~ ~ Black Cruiser was improving all the time at Riccarton, and if 1‘- Loomb keeps him going for the hurdle races at Auckland he should run promiuent.lv. That good sprinter Lady Cavendish is to make her' reappearance at betiding O. Cox stated at Riccarton that she had not been up very long, but she was one of those whose preparation need not be exacting. Mr. \V. J. Jorgensen was at Kiccarfon with Tanadees when his old Laughing Prince won the \V ekome

Stakes at Ellerslie. Laughing Prince will be at Ellerslie again next month to tackle Cimabue. The North Island racing folk at Riccarton received a shock when they learned how close a call Lysander had in the Great Northern Guineas, There appears to be little doubt that the state of the going had a lot to do with the colt’s near defeat. Volant, who ran a good race in the Stewards’ Handicap, was unable to start again after the second day of the meeting, owing to catching the prevailing complaint there last week, a drv cough. Bonaparte., who won the principal event at tbe V.A.T.C. meeting at Caulfield on Saturday, was bred at Waikanae bv Mr. I. G. Duncan. Three-year-olds have won 10 Stead Gold Cups since the race was instituted in 1908. Rapine gave Mr. A. B. Williams his first win in the event. Rapine has a great record in big events. Apart from Ins victories at weight-for-age in Australia, he has won in New Zealand, amongst other races, the Great Northern Champagne Stakes, the Avondale Guineas, both St. Leger Stakes, the Wellington Cup, the Trentham Gold Cup (twice), the Napier Cup the C.J.C. Metropolitan Handicap, the Auckland Cup, the Awaputii Gold Cup, the Canterbury Cup and the Stead Gold Cup. . R. Reed was right out of form at Riccarton. He rode a bad race on Rapine in the New Zealand Cup, gave an exceedingly weak exhibition on Seatown in the Derby, and on Commendation on Saturday undoubtedly lost the race through an error of judgment. Reed is usually so capable that his fall from grace last week w*as all the more conspicuous. Lhasa was omitted from the Mako Mako Handicap in the telegraphed acceptances for the Levin meeting.—Press Assn. z WAIKATO MEETING HAMILTON HANDICAP TO CHARLADY Bi Telegbavh.—Press Association Hamilton, November 15. For the concluding day of the Waikato Racing Club’s spring meeting fine but windy weather was experienced. The track was again holding. The totalisator return for the day was £24,740 10s., a decrease of £6244, and for the meeting £54,575 10s. was handled, a decrease of £lO 705.
