RICCARTON RACES
RAPINE WINS THE STEAD GOLD CUP MEMBERS’ HANDICAP TO CENTREPIECE CLARINDA SCORES IN FENDALTON (By “The Watcher.”) The Metropolitan meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club was concluded at Riccarton on Saturday in fine weather following heavy rain the previous day and night. The principal event, the G. G. Stead Gold Cup, was Avon after an exciting race by Rapine from the favourite Commendation. Centrepiece beat a good field in the Membeis Handicap, Nadarino being runner-up, and in the Fendalton Handicap, Clarinda and Footfall, the best backed runners, paid the dividends. The totalisator returns show a fairly substantial decrease compared with last year s meeting, but the racing throughout the four days w T as excellent.
The field which contested the Stead Gold Cup represented the very best class of horses in training, and was equal to the most select that has contested the same race in previous years. It is hard to detract from the winning performance of Rapine, but as the race was run Commendation was very unlucky to lose. He had the benefit of a perfect position in behind Reremoana ana Grand Knight to the straight, and just at *lie critical moment he became pocketed. By the time he got clear there was only a furlong and a half to go, and Rapine was three or four lengths ahead. Commendation made a brilliant burst after the leader, and rapidly reduced , the gap, but the tenacious Rapine would not surrender his advantage. The race will form the subject of endless argument, but two facts stand out boldly. Commendation .was unlucky, and is a high-class three-year-old; and the second fact is that Rapine is still a great horse, and only good ones will beat him. There was an inquiry into the interference whic hoccurred to Commendation, but to any close observer the official verdict,. ‘‘accidental,** was the only possible one. Rapine received an enthusiastic reception from the crowd. Mr. A. B. Williams was not present to witness the victory, and the gold cup was taken bj* trainer J. H. Jefferd. Reremoana was the outsider. He is not yet himself, but he ran a great race for a mile, in fact, a much better one than his trainer expected, an'd the latter was very pleased* with this horse’s showing. Grand Knight ran an excellent race. He had to go to the front two furlongs from home, owing to doing better at that stage than Reremoana, and he is not a horse who will do his best galloping in front. Star Stranger was never very prominent. The Members’ Handicap was won by the most improved horse at the meeting, Centrepiece. Each race found him going better, and he must now rank in the first flight of handicap horses up to a mile at least. Nadarino, the favourite, ran a good race His rider had him well placed all the way, but he went under to a better horse. Licinius failed to run up to his earlier form.
The Fendalton Handicap was, to a large extent, spoiled by the three-year-old race immediately preceding it. In the past the three-year-olds have taken a prominent part 1 in the Fendalton Handicap, which lias provided some thrilling contests. This year was the first occasion the special race for three-year-olds has been put on, and it took evervone of that age out of the big handicap. 'There was, nevertheless, a keen race, which was won narrowly by Clarinda from the greatly improved and consistent Footfall. Mr. R. A. McKenzie thus won the Metropolitan and Fendalton Handicaps, and to an extent this compensated for his bad luck with Clarinda in the New Zealanl Cup. Footfall is one of the best horses at present in the south. Fresco is improving with every race, and in a few weeks’ time will be at the top of his form.
Rapier won the Cressy Handicap like a good horse. He has been off _ the scene since winning his double at Trelltham in July, but in his race on the third day he showed good form. This, coupled with the heavy rain which fell overnight, gave his connections confidence in his ability to win, although the distance was generally considered too short for him. He was all out to beat the lightly weighted aperchase at the finish, but he stayed too well for her, and he should now go on to further successes. High Fitch ran his best race since he occupied the position of runner-up to Te Monanui at the Avondale spring meeting. He was a bit unlucky, perhaps, but although bis connections think they should . have won. Rapier's performance was very convincing. Booster ran another excellent race, after being in front to the straight. Ridden more judiciously than lie was at Riccarton, Booster is an earlv winner. For crossing too soon on the winner when taking the lead, C. Emerson was severely reprimanded. It was, incidentally, his onlv winning ride of the four days. The track was soft when racing started, but with bright sunshine and a light breeze it dried rapidly, and the racing was held under ideal conditions. The attendance was good, but another decrease in totalisator returns was recorder!, amounting to £3763, the figures for the dav being £55,029, os against £58,792 on the concluding day last year The figures for the four days were:
tlncreasc. SUBURBAN HANDICAP. Goosestep, Savonara, and Sir Roy were the favourites tor the welter race, but thev failed to get a place. Monoxide, Kalakaua, Clare Crag, Lady Clarenceux, and Sir Roy were the most prominent for six furlongs. . The Harp then moved up and Santiago and Sminv Loch went up from the rear. The Harp was well clear at the distance, and he won very easily from Sunnv Loch, who just beat Santiago. Goosestep was a moderate fourth, and the best of the others were Sir Roy,
Monoxide, and Lady Clarenceux. The winner was so sore prior to the rain that he could not be started. CRESSY HANDICAP. Booster was favourite for the Cressy Handicap, but there was solid backing for Mirensonta, Rapier, High Pitch, and Set Sail. Lady Desmond was unruly • at the barrier and one of the others were also .fractious. Lady •Desmond was eventually held at the barrier and a good start was effected. Einora, Gold Brick, and Booster were quickest out and abreast led Mireusonta, Nincompoop, High Pitch and Set Sail to the straight, the field being well bunched, Rapier on the outer. Once in line there was a great race. Set Sail got the leaders first, but she quickly gave way to High Pitch, with Paperchase on the inner and Rapier on the outer, gaining rapidly. In a tough battle Rapier and Paperchase drew out and Rapier won by a jiead. High Pitch was a good third, and Booster again fourth, with Economist, Lady Desmond and Set Sail the best of the others. SEYMOUR HANDICAP.
David Garrick, Vesperus, Taboo and Beau Geste were the favourites for the Seymour Handicap, and the first three filled the places. It was a great betting race and Taboo, whose form at the meeting was remarkably consistent, paid a good price. Vesperus got badly knocked in the running and would have been hard to beat with ordinary luck. Solrose, Goldtown and Precious showed out first, Goldtown leading round the bend from Princess Malfalda, Celerity 11. and Dark Spot. Celerity 11. led into the straight, where the positions underwent a rapid change. Taboo and David Garrick shot out and Vesperus put.in a great run from the rear. Taboo, however, won fairly comfortably. Bonhomme ran another good race, being in line with Dark Spot for fourth. Beau Geste ran a bad race.
MEMBERS’ HANDICAP. There was good betting in the Members’ Handicap, Nadarino being the favourite, with solid support for Licinius, Centrepiece, and Arpent. When settled down Arpent and Fool’s Paradise led Licinius and Nadarino, Father O’Flynn heading the bunch. Arpent was two lengths clear at the half mile, where Centrepiece was last. Approaching the straight Roues and Father O’Flynn nioXed up. Arpent headed for home from Fool’s Paradise, Father O’Flvnn, Rouex, and Nadarino. Arpent was" beaten outside the distance, where Centrepiece came solidly, and Nadarino moved forward Centrepiece finished too well for the favourite, and won very decisively. Circulation was a moderate fourth, and Father O’Flynn next, followed by Arpent and Inferno. PIONEER HANDICAP. Royal Ceres touched a very short price" in the two-year-old handicap, and there was never any doubt about what would win. He got away well and ran with Monev Peer, Wayward, and Starflight to the straight At the distance he took the lead off Money Peer, but the latter hung on very well and made the favourite do his best. At the distance Starfliglit looked certain to get second, but she faded back in the last pinch, and Jericho finished very solidly from the back to take the minor placing, close to Money Peer Apart from one or two, the class of youngsters at the meeting was not good STEAD GOLD CUP. The five horses who went to the post in the G. J. Stead Gold Cup represented the best class. Commendation was a hot favourite, carrying just about half the pool, and he was more than twice as well backed as the Rapine-Star Stranger bracket. Grand Knight was also very well supported, Reremoana being the outsider. A great race was witnessed. Reremoana took up the role of pacemaker aud led Grand Knight and Commendation from Star Stranger, Rapine being three or four lengths away. There was no change to the half mile, the first two furlongs being run in 2G 3-ssec.., the first- half in 51 3-ssec., and the first six furlongs in Imin. 17 3-ssec. Rapine then began to draw up, and entering the straight, was almost on terms with Reremoana and Grand Knight, Commendation sticking to the rails fol an opening at the false rail. The opening, however, did not come, and here Commendation lost the race. First he got squeezed back in trying to get up on the inside of the two leaders, aud again in trying to get through between Grand Knight and Rapine Fir.allv Reed had to come to the centre, and by this time they were at the distance post. Rapine haying a clear advantage, and going like a train. Commendation responded grandly to his rider’s calls upon him, but lie could onlv reduce Rapine’s lead to a head at the post, after a great race. Grand Knight was a fair third and Reremoana next. Star Stranger being ldSt STONYHURST HANDICAP. Seatown was favourite for the threc-year--'ld Handicap, there being gool support also for Pink Terrace, Hynanna and Countersign. Seatowu was disinclined to lace the tapes, but eventually got out best and led to the turn, where Hvnanna and Alyson were next, with Pink Terrace prominent. Countersign had gone back and Front Rank was iti the rear. As thev turned for home Seatown had command * from Hvnanna, Pink Terrace, and Front Rank. *llie last-named drew up well, but Seatown won bv a good length. Pink Terrace was a'moderate third, just a bead in front of Hvnanna. High Gear Rascal, and Alvson headed the beaten lot. Seatown stood up well to his racing at the meeting. FEN DA LTt >N HANDICAP Clarinda, who bad been ntihiekv in the New Zealand Cup. was a hot favourite, but solid backing was aecorued Footfall and Fresco, with nothing paying an extreme price. Vaward, purchased the previous day by Mr. J. DI. San>son, was coupled with that sportsman’s
other winner, Mountain Lion. Ravenna, who is a hard puller, at once went to the front from Full Swing and Clarinda, then came Mr. Samson’s pair, and Fresco, Footfall bringing up the rear. There was no change till turning for home, when they closed up. Ravenna ard Full Swing were done with as soon as they reached the straight, where Clarinda, Fresco, and Footfall closed strongly, and in a fine finish Clarinda had a Tittle in reserve and won by a long head. A couple of lengths away, Fresco, Full Swing, and Vaward crossed the line together. SUBURBAN HANDICAP, of 300 sovs. Nine 6 Mr. P. Delargey’s b. g. The Harp, bv Our King—Mandoline, Gyrs., 9.13 (J. In the Hurdles West Abbey was made a slightly better favourite than Pendennis, with Mia Bella and Greekson next fancied. Pendennis led till five furlongs from home, where Greekson ran up to him and the latter was in front before the straight was reached, with Pendennis, West Abbey, Gold Rain and Gold Rep most handy of the others. Greekson went on to win nicely by two lengths from Gold Rep, with Gold Ram three-quarters of a length further back. Then came Pendennis, West Abbey, Hangawera. Gold Rain is likely to improve most, and more experience should make him a good hurdler. A big field went to the post in the Trial Handicap, and the public went for King Arch, Bracken, Abbey, and Quondong, the rest being at good prices. Dimmer showed up early, but Joy Germ soon took charge, and entering the straight was attended by Lucy Glitters, High Rose, Master Mind, Abbess, and Day Rose. Joy Germ went on to win by two lengths from Bright Comet, who beat Master' Mind by a neck. Abbess, and Tea Leaf were next. The Tamahere Stakes was' contested by seven two-year-olds, . Chips being about £2O better backed than Paganelli, while Auriculus was next fancied. Fanchoo got badly left, and Exalted and Master-Clements carried on the running to the straight; where Paganelli and Exalted drew out from Master Clements and Chips. At" the distance Chips put in her claim and won by half a length from Paganelli, who beat Exalted by three lengths. Auriculus was fourth. The winner is by Paper Money from Killena, and owned by Mr. J. A-. Taylor, Wellington. Exalted, who is by Leighton from Flora MacDonald, will be useful later on. . The Waikato Cup was a good betting race. Nippy was the only defection, and his stable companion, Eden Hall, carried about £l2O more than Master Doon, with Merry Day next in demand. Transformer and Wiltshire led along the back-from Lord Star, Quincoma, Eden Hall, Tresham, Master Doon, and Ruapapa. Before the top was reached Lord Star was in front, and-piloted the field into the straight, with Quincoma, Tresham, Eden Hall,- Mint Leaf, and Master Doon next, Eden. Hall and Tresham drew out at-the distance, only to be joined by Master Doon, and a great, finish.saw Master. Doon, get -the decision by a head from Eden Hall and Tresham, who the judge was unable to. separate. Mint Leaf,.was fourth, followed by Te Kara, Gold Jacket, Merry Day, Lord Star, and Ruapapa. Roval Mint was- a good favourite for the Claudelands Welter Handicap, Passionate, Wenday, and King Smock being the best backed of the others. King Smock got out well and soon had a break on the field, but was steadied, Hyde Park and Charlad)’ going to the front with King Smock, Curraghmore, Miss Vera, and Royal Mint next. Once into the straight King Smock challenged, and staying on better' than the others beat Hyde Park by three-quarters of a length. Charlady was a length away third, with Royal Mint, Miss .Vera, and Wendav next. Roval Mint did not get a good position early, and got fourth under pressure. The bracket Hazelburn and Ravmono was made favourite for the Clarkin Steeplechase, while Prince Rufus, Mahgoloire, and Pentagram - were backed
in that. order. , Kendal was soon in front, and entering on the last round was attended by Hazelburn, Pentagram, Temaire, Mahg’oloire, and Prince Rufus. Hazelburn ran up to Kendal five furlongs from home, but at the second to last fence fell. Turning for home Kendal was attended by Pentagram, Prince Rufus, and Raymond,, but at the last fence'Pentagram headed Kendal, and stalling off Prince Rufus won by two and a half lengths. Kendal was four lengths away third, followed by Raymond, Mahgoloire, and Glenotus, with Te Maire last. Kingfield was solidly supported for the Cambridge Handicap, with Dave and Ned Kelly next fancied. Kingfield was soon in front, and into the straight was attended by Dave, Heisler, and Chairman. Dave and Chairman then drew but,...and Chairman got the decision by half a neck from Dave, who beat Ned Kelly by a length. The Lamb, Kingfield, Dan Quin (who lost his rider in the preliminary and bolted a considerable distance), and Serang next. In the Hautapu Handicap, Tinokoa was the hottest favourite of the day, with Delightment carrying about half as much- in second choice. Billikins carried on the running to the straight, where Delightment, Flying Juliet, Tinokoa, and Daytaro were most prominent of the others. Delightment then shot out and. opened up a big break on Tinokoa. Under Punishment Delightment stayed on to get the verdict by half a length .from Tinokoa, with Festina Lente eight lengths away third. Flying Juliet, Macroom, and Daytaro were next. If Tinokoa had got a good position early he would have won. Good fields are engaged for the concluding day (Monday). . In the hurdles, Greekson, Gold Ram, and Mia Bella may be best fancied. In the Frankton Handicap, Daytaro, Quondong, and Abbess may find most favour. , „ , Seven are engaged in the Ruakura Stakes, and Chips, Paganelli, and Exalted should run well. A dozen remain in the Hamilton Handicap, and Tresham, Master Doon, and Mint Leaf should be prominent. In the Tauwahare Welter Handicap Arch Opal, Hyde Park, and King ■Smock should run well, while in the steeplechase Kendal, Pentagram, and Prince Rufus should run well forward. Dave, Kingfield, and Ned Kelly may be well to the fore in the Kinkinroa Handicap, while in the Taupiri Handicap Delightment, Billikins, and Flying Juliet may be prominent.
