A PLUCKY ACTIONS
Sir.—About a fortnight ago. when the Hutt River was in flood, a brave act was performed by one' of the men employed by the Hutt River Shingle Co.' at Melling, which has apparently been allowed to pass without being reported. The facts are as follow:
Two men employed by the above company endeavoured to cross the river with a team of three horses and a dray, but 1 they soon got into difficulties, owing to the ford being washed away. The horses got out of control, a wheel came off the dray, and the men were thrown into the river, which was running strong, at the spot. One of the men, George McCall, who could not swim, was in great danger of being drowned, and a driver employed by the company, named W. ’ Frederick, immediately swam out to his rescue and after some difficulty managed to get McCall ashore. Frederick was practically exhausted, and McCall was some time before he could be brought round. As Frederick endangered his own .life in saving his fellow worker. I .consider his plucky action should not be. allowed to drop unnoticed. Trusting you will see your way clear to make known the above facts.—l am, etc., . ' ADMIRER OF PLUCK.
