Considerable interest was evinced .in a. poll taken to-day as to whether’ the tramway system should be discontinued ?an’d replaced by-buses; A poll'was taken on September .10, when the proposal to scrap the trains was carried by 152 votes?-• A 'petition'“was then“ lodged to declare the poll void, and .after lengthy hearing before Mr. Lbvvey, S.M., the petition was- upheld, -;.mainly on the ground tlia't the" poll was taken under the Local Bodies’. .Elections and Polls ?Act of 1925, whereas it should have come under the amended. Act of 1926, which came into force on September 9, one day previous to the poll.. The-bld Act, under which the first poll. was. taken, provided for either marking ballot papers with a cross or striking out the proposal,.whereas the new Act provides only for striking but the proposal. The poll to-dnv' reasserted the ratepayers’ determination to scrap the .trams; the voting being 1143 for ihc proposal and 910 against.
