ATTEMPT TO ENTER A POST OFFICE
EXPLOSIVE USED ON DOORS
Dominion Special.
Auckland, November J2.
An unsuccessful attempt to effect an entry to Green Laue Post and' -Telegraph Office with explosives was made in the early hours of this morning. Two. heavy .detonations Were heard? by residents : of' the Great South Road within, a few. doors of the: post office but .they, were attributed to a belated celebration of the fifth of November; Apparently .the •: attempt .was made shortly after 1 o’clock when the street was deserted. The damaged .front d<*or attracted the attention .of,. pedestrians at . about 7 a. tn., and an inspection of; the building disclosed that explosives had been applied' to "the jamb of the door opening' bn the Great South Road and also to the back door, facing a residence. The front door was: badly shattered near the lock, but it did -not yield and the postal officer'arrived at 9 a.m. to find a detective waiting to be admitted. The damaged -lock was turned with the key ..without, difficulty. A remarkable feature of the explosion was that a glass pane, in the front of the office ; and within.’.6 inches'of the lock was not damaged. The explosive was one of the gelatine variety; - It was apparently applied rather crudely to the locks arid liberally covered with a plaster of putty ? and. sand. This mixture was scattered about the doorway and must have , had but a slight smothering effect on the explosion.
