Marton, November 12. The position of candidates in the Marton baby carnival (promoted in aid of the rest room fund) are as follow: Band and town, '22,420 votes; farmers, 20.400; Marton Junction, 20,280; sports and pastimes, 15,900. Interest shows no signs of abating and by the end of the month when the carnival closes there should lie a large sum in hand towards the cost of erecting a Plunket and rest Three companies of Girl Guides have Ix-.en formed in Marton, with a total membership of 60. The captains are Mrs. J. B. Reed (Rangers), Miss Deighton (Marton No. 1), Miss G. Hewitt (Marton No. 2). The enrolling ceremony took place this week and. was performed by District Commissioner Miss Newcombe, of Wanganui. The Rangitikei Cricket Association will play a Hawke Cup match againstManawatu on December 8 and 9. A representatives match against Taihape will be played on December 18. Mr. J. McDonald, who has been on the staff of the Marton Sash and Door Co. for the past 14 years, is severing his connection with the firm, and on Wednesday evening he was met by fellow workers and business associates and presented with a substantial cheque as a token of esteem. „ At the meeting of the Kiwitea Rabbit Board this week feeling reference was made to the passing of the board’s late chairman, Mr. A. P. Francis, and the lollowing resolution was carried in silence:, “That this board deeply regrets the passing of the late chairman and deplores the loss of one whose activities have been wholeheartedly in the interests of the ratepayers and residents of this and surrounding districts; and that a letter be forwarded to his widow and family expressing the board’s very deep sympathy in the great loss they have sustained.” At the Hunterville Court this week a girl of 19 was charged with writing'indecent matter on the walls of a public building, and on the recommendation of the child welfare officer (Mr. Lucey) slie was committed to a Borstal institution for a term of two years. The girl had been previously convicted for theft. In the cricket comnetifion matches on Wednesday Hunterville defeated Marton Junction and Porewa defeated Broadu’ay. A feature of the, competition so far is the good showing of the two new teams. Hunterville and Colts, neither having lost a match. Mr. Mackintosh (Commissioner of Crown T.aivlsl inspected the Pntorino Soldier Settlement last week and adjusted some slight grievances with Hie settlers. He expressed his satisfaction with (he wav in which the soldiers were farming their properties. The Rangitikei County Council hnvc approved of the plans and specifications for setting out the new seaside -csort on the northern bank of the Rangitikei River. The township will now he called Moan.i Roa (The I,on- Sen), as the name ori-innllv suggested (Talialte) is the de, -ignntion of a native village in the North .Auckland district. Provision has been made on the plans for a public rnrreation -round, a post office, a school md a public hall.
